JOAN VACCARO and MAUREEN FISHER met through a book club. Although both designers had individual practices, they began to talk about creating a new design studio together. They wanted a studio that would bring a hands-on perspective to problem solving and empower the client to think creatively and realistically about design requirements and solutions.

We design cabinetry -- kitchen cabinets and islands, built-in shelving and storage systems, servers, pantries, linen closets, desks -- to suit each client's specific needs and taste. We focus on function and sustainability. As green building specialists, we are current with what's available and how it functions.

When my wife and I were moving into our new home, we knew what conceptually how we wanted the place to look. But we did not know how to go about making the whole place look the same way. We knew what colors we liked and what style we wanted but making everything look right and all of the little details was just not our thing.
I was recommended to Joan and had her visit our home while it was still under construction. There was a lot of trying to explain how the fresh dry wall and floor coverings we going to look when all finished. She was instantly able to see it all in her head and picture

I came in here looking to spruce up my apartment on a budget. Design in Real Life has a really cute, hidden storefront, and is run by two really sweet women. While a lot of the bigger pieces in the shop are out of my price range, there's a treasure trove of smaller items - trays, coasters, dishware - that these interior designers use for styling. I snagged two trays, a papier mâché table/stool, and some dishware for under $100.
