Services
Dr. Servat specializes in a wide variety of surgical procedures involving the most advanced endoscopic and laser techniques in ophthalmic plastic surgery, including endoscopic lacrimal surgery (DCR) and endoscopic brow lift. His clinical interests include problems involving the eyelids, orbit (eye socket) and tear ducts.
Ptosis, or drooping of the upper eyelid, is caused by the gradual stretching or weakening of the muscles that raise the upper eyelid. In some cases, ptosis is congenital, where children are born with weakened eyelid muscles. The most common form of ptosis occurs with natural aging and creates a tired appearance.
As we age, the eyebrows can descend below their more youthful position. In some cases, the lowered eyebrows can impair vision, or make it difficult to open the eyes. Three factors affect drooping of the upper lids: lowering of the lid margin (true ptosis); excess tissue between the eyebrows and eye lashes (dermatochalasis); and dropping of the eyebrows (brow ptosis).
When the nasolacrimal (tear) duct becomes obstructed, a dacryocstorhinostomy (DCR) is often indicated. The primary goal of the surgery is to provide a pathway for tear drainage from the eye to the inside of the nose. The tear duct can be opened either endoscopically through the nose, or by an 'open' DCR which accesses the duct obstruction by making an incision along the nose.
The orbit is a series of bones that comprise the eye socket. Orbital fractures can result from trauma and may require surgical repair if accompanied by double vision, difficulty seeing, or deformity. Such surgery may involve exploration of the area to determine the full extent of the injury and implantation of various materials to rebuild and reinforce the wall of the orbit.
