Heartland Harley-Davidson/Buell was founded in 1994 by Bob Knoll and Bill Knoll, both Detroit natives, and Harley enthusiasts. Through the late 1970s and early 1980s, Bob Knoll raced Formula Fords and had some experience road racing sport motorcycles, satisfying his "need for speed", but that changed in 1976 when he bought his first new Harley-Davidson motorcycle: a Sportster.
