Zinc anodes are used to protect the metallic parts of boats and other water vessels from electrolysis-caused corrosion. Zinc is a sacrificial anode, which means it oxidizes quicker than the metal it is protecting, thus protecting the iron from corroding. At Mayer Alloys, we have zinc anodes available in weld-on and bolt-on mounting systems.
Tin-Lead anodes are produced from high purity materials and are used for electroplating, hard and decorative chrome plating, general manufacturing plating, and as an etch resistant. Additionally, they reduce scrap. Common Plating Anode alloys are Pure Tin, Pure Lead, Tin/Lead, and various lead-free alloys.
Babbitt is a white metal alloy, or bearing material, that is typically used as a thin surface layer in complex, multi-metal structures. However, lead can sometimes replace tin. Babbitt bearings are known for their soft composition. Though it is generally soft, it's made up of small hard crystals that are dispersed in a matrix of softer alloy.
Flux is a chemical cleaning agent, flowing agent, or purifying agent that dissolves the oxides already present on a metal surface and acts as an oxygen barrier by coating the hot surface, preventing its oxidation. It also cleans and prepares the joint to accept the solder, allowing it to adhere to the clean metal surface.
