Indoor Air Quality is a term that describes how the air inside a building can affect the occupants' health, comfort, and ability to perform work. A workplace with poor IAQ distracts employees from tasks, resulting in decreased productivity. Unlike the workplace, Residential IAQ can be a bigger issue, because most of us spend much more time at home than at work.
Lead based paint is a toxic hazard. Whether you are buying or selling a house, it's always a good to know about the home's paint history. Lead paint has been banned from residential use since 1978 but homes built before 1978 have the potential of carrying a lead hazard. Lead is a neurotoxin, or chemical that harms our nervous system (the brain and nerve network that sends messages to the body).
A Lead Paint Inspection is a surface-by-surface test to determine if lead based paint is in your home. Lead paint was used in homes (before the danger was known) because it provided a protective coating for wood, lasted a long time, and discouraged mold growth. It can be found on house exteriors, bathrooms and kitchens of homes built before 1978.
The inspection identifies where in the home there definitely is/is not lead paint. This source of lead is only a problem if the paint has chipped, cracked, abraded or otherwise deteriorated. Usually a lead risk assessment is requested when a child has a high blood lead level. Trained assessors find lead sources and create a plan to minimize the lead poisoning risk.
