As a parent, you may wish for a voice of wisdom to help you make decisions about what is best for your child. Our educational programs will help you feel more knowledgeable and confident as an advocate for your child. The VFF is here to support you to use your voice and experiences to inform the system of care in a way that will improve policy's and practices, which will intern improve services for all families.

Our vision is that children, youth, young adults and families experiencing or at risk to experience social, emotional or behavioral challenges are connected to peers for support, receive practical information. News and resources for Vermont families! The first hints of Spring are here! As the weather grows warmer we hope everyone can find some time to get outside.
Services
The Vermont Federation of Families for Children's Mental Health exists to support families and children where a child or youth, age 0-22, is experiencing or at risk to experience emotional, behavioral, or mental health challenges. Advocating for accessible, flexible and quality family centered and driven services on a local, state and national level.
Representatives from the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline are ready to help, or you may contact your local mental health crisis line. The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention is dedicated to advancing our knowledge of suicide and our ability to prevent it. Research Projects that help further the understanding and treatment of depression and the prevention of suicide.
Use "person first" vocabulary. When we say a person is schizophrenic, we make their mental illness fully define their identity. Instead, be clear that this is a disease that individuals manage and live with - "He is living with schizophrenia.". While there may be times when it is too challenging or simply not possible to politely correct someone else's insensitive use of language, you can always watch your own.
The VFF is here to support you to use your voice and experiences to inform the system of care in a way that will improve policies and practices, which will in turn improve support and services for all families. In some cases, you are eligible for a stipend for your time and expertise.

Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities Standing Committees are required advisory groups involving people receiving services and others not employed by the department of Mental Health or the local designated Mental Health Agency.In every legislative session- January through May- there is opportunity for consumers, individuals and families to share their perspective and story.
If a child's personal Treatment Team is unable to agree upon or implement a Coordinated Service Plan to meet the needs of the individual and his/her family, they can bring the problem to their Local Inter-agency Team (LIT).

The Team is composed at a minimum of representatives from the community mental health center, local school districts, the local office of the Department for Children and Families, Division of Family Service and family /parent representative members.Their purpose is to provide technical assistance to a Treatment Team to implement a successful Coordinated Service Plan and to help develop the system of care in that region.
