Established in 1951, the Maine Academy of Family Physicians (MAFP) is the largest specialty physician organization in Maine, currently representing over 700 family physicians, family medicine residents and medical students. Family physicians, like other medical specialists, complete an extensive three-year residency program after graduating from medical school.
To provide responsible advocacy for and education of patients and the public in all health-related matters. To promote the science and art of family medicine and to promote an optimal supply of well-trained family physicians. To preserve the right of family physicians to engage in medical and surgical procedures for which they are qualified by training and experience.
The Maine Academy of Family Physicians (MAFP) is pleased to award Maine's 2019 Family Physician of the Year to Julia McDonald DO, MPH of Augusta. As faculty at the Maine Dartmouth Family Medicine Residency, Dr. McDonald's practice includes primary care for all ages, obstetrics, hospital medicine, addiction treatment, and reproductive health care.
Family physicians are residency-trained, primary care specialists dedicated to treating the whole person. With a focus on prevention, primary care, and overall care coordination, family physicians provide a wide variety of clinical services, and, when necessary, refer their patients to a specialist, while continuing to advocate for that patient's care.
We are a group of primary care physicians and psychiatrists who are concerned about the lack of available psychiatric resources in many areas of Maine. Recognizing that primary care providers provide the bulk of psychiatric services, we developed a program to make psychiatric consultation available to primary care practices throughout the state.
