Joseph Thomas McKenzie, founder of McKenzie Mortuary, came to Columbus County in the 1880's and was one of the county's pioneer businessmen and leaders. McKenzie Mortuary began modestly, selling wooden coffins from his livery stable on East Commerce Street. As the area developed and local businesses grew, Mr. McKenzie opened Columbus County's first undertaking firm in 1890.
At McKenzie Mortuary, we take great pride in caring for our families, and will work tirelessly to provide you with a beautiful, lasting tribute to your loved one. In addition to the services we offer, you will receive an online memorial that you can share with family and friends. While honoring your loved one is our top priority, we also want to help you through this difficult time.
We realize that every loved one we take into our care was a unique person. We offer many different options to our families for celebrating those unique lives. Our offerings to our client families include full traditional funeral services, religious and non-religious gatherings and ceremonies, memorial services with or without the loved one present, and immediate dispositions such as interment or cremation with no services or ceremonies involved.
A pre-arranged funeral is simply planning funeral arrangements and providing for payment of your funeral in advance. This allows an individual to express personal preferences about the type of services preferred with family members. Pre-planning a funeral can alleviate both the stress of making decisions at a difficult time and concerns about the family's ability to pay for the funeral.
Meaningful memorialization of a loved one's passing can transform, heal, and comfort us. It highlights our loved ones' sacrifices, reminds us of the things that they value, and inspires us with their life stories. Have the Talk of a Lifetime, a program created by The Funeral and Memorial Information Council, was designed to help families have meaningful conversations about the things that matter most in their lives.
