Many mental health professionals volunteer their time as first responders in the wake of large-scale disasters. All too often, they've found that their clinical training and therapeutic instincts don't fully apply to the circumstances in which they find themselves, and may actually render them less effective.
After years and years of working in this and grappling with this, the conclusion that many of us are coming to is that in order to help these animal, frozen, inappropriate, fight/flight/freeze responses to come to an end, you need to work with people's bodily responses. You need to help their body to feel like it's over.
In recent years, growing numbers of therapists have found that body-oriented approaches can be highly effective in helping clients to resolve traumatic experiences. This DVD series provides complete demonstration sessions in three body-oriented modalities: Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, Somatic Experiencing, and Psycho-Physical Therapy.
Abuse and neglect can have profound effects on children's neurological development, and on their behaviors. The often devastating impacts of traumaon children's sense of self, on their ability to regulate their emotions, and on their capacity to talk about what has happened to themcan pose major challenges for child protective services workers, law enforcement investigators, forensic interviewers, and prosecutors.
When a child has a poor attachment to their parent, it leads to all kinds of problems, because they have not learned how to regulate their emotions, they have not learned self-control, they have not learned self-reliance in a positive way. A secure attachment system forms the foundation for a child's development.
