Mental Health Association in New York State, Inc. (MHANYS) is an agency of support, education and advocacy for mental health issues, and has been for over fifty years. As part of its mission, MHANYS advocates for change in the mental health system ensuring access for all New Yorkers, fights stigma through community-based partnership programming, and provides information on mental health issues and services.
MHANYS has led advocacy efforts in NYS resulting in such laws as the Mental Health Awareness Tax Checkoff, which raises funds to end discrimination against mental illness, and Timothy's Law, which mandates mental health parity. These laws are part of a long, full, and varied history of advocacy, organizing, and grassroots efforts that improved the lives of all New Yorkers.

During the early days of mental health treatment, asylums often restrained persons with mental illnesses with iron chains and shackles around their ankles and wrists. Clifford Beers, the founder of the Mental Health Association movement, experienced and witnessed many of these and other abuses. After his own recovery, he became a leading figure in the movement to reform the treatment of, and attitudes toward, mental illness.
In our mission to end the stigma surrounding mental illness and promote mental health wellness across the state, MHANYS has many programs - in mental health policy, education, community engagement, etc. - through which volunteers can make an impact. Our volunteer team includes students, professionals, and regular members of the community of diverse backgrounds who work to ensure mental health wellness in our local communities.
Of the nearly 20 million people living in New York state, some 5 million (1 in 4) will experience a mental health problem in any given year. That means we are all affected by mental illness either personally or through a family member or close friend. If you or a loved one is experiencing a mental health challenge, you are not alone and we are working hard to assure that help is available for all in need.
