Services
SIMHC opened as a Community Mental Health Center in 1966 following the tragic death of a Wapello County Jail inmate. The county knew we could do better with outpatient treatment. The Center's first location was on the first floor of Ottumwa Regional Health Center and only served those patients leaving the inpatient unit that had no insurance.
Access Centers are designed to provide immediate short - term assessments for people in a mental health or substance abuse crisis. This is for individuals who do not need an inpatient hospitalization, however are not able to be treated on an outpatient basis either. Within an Access Center patients will be immediately assessed for medical, mental health and substance abuse related disorders.

From time to time patients feel that the use of medications may help to manage their symptoms. When this need arises, SIMHC has five prescribers that are able to prescribe medications to adults.
ACT is a program of comprehensive outpatient services consistent with evidence - based practice standards published by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).
