Psychotherapy averages about 12 - 20 sessions and focuses on the personal goals you want to accomplish. Dr. Sheryl Smith is an independent practitioner of psychotherapy with adults, couples and families. She works with athletes of all ages to improve their performance. Most people enter into psychotherapy because they feel stuck.
Often this feeling is accompanied by anxiety or depression or other symptoms. They have tried everything they know of to feel better, without success. Psychotherapy uses the relationship with the therapist to reveal a person's underlying belief system that governs their thoughts and feelings.

Services
Practice emotional and attentional self-regulation as you would learn any motor skills; first, learn the techniques, then rehearse them at home and during your sport practices. As your confidence grows, apply them in increasingly high stakes competition. In your experience, is there more enjoyment of the process of sport or worry about the outcome?
Resonance breathing - Respiration regulates body chemistry. Diaphragmatic, or 'belly' breathing corrects maladaptive breathing patterns and lowers anxiety when needed. Visualization of positive performance - Imagery that uses all the senses is used to mentally rehearse the motor sequences and emotional states of performing at your best.

In addition to hearing ideas and techniques they had not thought of, patients tell me they feel better in the presence of someone who is understanding them deeply as they address issues they would prefer to avoid. They feel more settled and have more energy to bring to bear on their problems. Together we find out important information.
