Home Directions
Your home inspector's mission is to help you figure out what you need to know about a potential new home and its components (except *environmental issues). We're here to help find problems before you purchase, so you're aware of problems and expenses before you commit. Our home inspections concentrate on 8 major topics: roof, foundation, structure, plumbing, electrical, heating and air conditioning, water, and septic.

We also look at important secondary building components including siding, windows, drainage, hot water, and finishes. If you have specific questions or concerns about a property, we're happy to discuss those as well (for example renovation ideas).
Services
While home inspections are our primary business, Home Directions also provides consultations for property owners, home inspectors, and other building professionals. Wait, did you say other home inspectors? Remember, most home inspectors are not Professional Engineers. Sometimes home inspectors find structural issues they're not trained to advise about and bring us in to help.
Increasing complexity of the subject matter, particularly in the area of environmental concerns;. A growing compulsion among home buyers to do everything in the very best way possible for their families. I try to put things into perspective by answering commonly asked questions. I also philosophize just a bit.
In the course of a Home Inspection, often we take water samples (in the case of a water well) to analyze chemical and bacterial content as well as Radon to determine the quality of the water the well is producing. Also, it is very common that we administer a Radon in the Air test. To give you an idea of the writing style, presentation and typical content, this third file is a Sample Report.

Peter came and took a look at a crack in the foundation of a home that I had an accepted offer on after my inspector suggested that I have a structural engineer come take a look. While I was unable to attend the consultation, I got all the information that I needed through the detailed report that I received 24 hours later. The report included photos and very detailed notes that outlined exactly what his thoughts were. I highly recommend Peter as a structural engineer and I wouldn't hesitate to hire him again if ever needed.

This home inspector was horrible. Even Town Building Department officials said he did not know what he was talking about.  Peter has no knowledge of town codes, or if he does he completely disregards them.  Even experts that he makes potential homeowners get to additionally come out to look at the property are left scratching their heads as to WHY he made the potential homeowner pay to have them come out...because, again, his big "issue" is a NON-ISSUE.  All the things he "found" wrong with the property were actually not wrong nor were they issues at all. He tries to frighten

The inspector provided a clear and logical explanation as to how best to repair an indoor cathedral beam cracked from damaged caused by a large tree branch that fell during Hurricane Isaiah on Aug. 4, 2020.
It was reassuring to be provided this information from a structural engineer. Thank You.

Peter was wonderful. I called him for a structural inspection after my general inspection turned up some questionable items in a home I was looking to purchase. Peter barely spoke as he first reviewed all of the questions that had come up in the general home inspection. Once he had taken in all visuals, measurements, etc, he walked me through each item, explained exactly what needed to be done for remediation along with a cost range of the work and timeline of when it should be addressed. I learned so much about the house, what was done right and what could use some attention. He gave me much more

I have worked with Peter at Home Directions on multiple occasions involving the purchase and later renovation of our home in CT as well as the sale of my parents home in NY. Aside from being extremely knowledgable in all aspects of construction and engineering, he has a brilliant knack for making difficult concepts understandable, and that helps a lot when it comes to understanding all the tradeoffs and making follow up decisions. Would use again and recommend highly to anyone needing expert advice.

I met Peter 30 yrs. ago when I bought my home. Rather than hire the typical home inspector who is NOT allowed by LAW to tell you the specifics of any issues and only fulfills a closing requirement as they can only refer you to call the appropriate type contractor for whatever they may find which, personally, I find to be a total waste of money because all you get is the necessary bank requirement completed and the potential for a lot more inspections by qualified contractors for which you must pay...save your dough!!!
Hire Home Directions.

Be guarded when using this company - the inspector opined in his report that a new roof for my house would cost roughly $100,000 - when In fact multiple estimates came in at 40-50% that number. One would of thought with his 30 years of experience and his “engineering” background he would of been more accurate or not commented on matters of cost what so ever til estimates had come through. I’m sure this is not the 1st roof he has ever inspected, poor form !

Peter of Home Directions came to our home to investigate and offer solutions to a leak in our roof. He was most professional and recommended in detail the best way to solve the leak problem. He was our home inspector five years ago when we bought this 1840 house and pointed out the possibility of roof leakage in several areas. Most of these roof repairs were done but apparently there is one that was not completely corrected. Based on Peter's expert analysis and recommendation we will request estimates from several roofers to repair the roof. I would be glad to highly recommend Peter to potential

Peter responded promptly to my email and came round immediately to assess a structural issue in our basement. He was very thorough in his inspection and took the time to explain his findings to us in detail. We found him to be honest and sincere, and would not hesitate to recommend his services.

Home Directions is no stranger to Fairfield County. Over the years it has gained a well deserved reputation for excellence. Peter Seirup is a licensed professional engineer and puts those skills to use when he is evaluating a property. He takes great care with both a house inspection for prospective purchasers and can also put his engineering skills to use for more involved evaluations. He is knowledgeable and professional. I highly recommend Home Directions and Peter Seirup.

I was blown away with the knowledge Peter has. We are new home owners and he explained everything to us so we really understood. We had our child at the inspection with us and Peter was terrific with him he even inspected the tree house! My family will be customers for life!
