This troubles the minds of many managers (and auditors) who wonder if we need to just conjure up something, just for show. After all, what kind of performance indicator is of any value for something like management review? That is a fair question. We should ask ourselves what Craig Cochran's book ISO 9001:2015 In Plain English explains all this better than I could.
Context of the organization. The ISO 9001 Auditing Practices Group Guidance document on Context describes a need for the organization to understand its status, what it wants to achieve, and how it wants to achieve the wants (strategy). Many tools are listed with which to establish this understanding; business plan is at the top of the list.
To start with, I would like to do away with the term quality. Its historical definition (Juran) was "Fitness for intended use, " but that limits us to outcomes. It is a pen that writes smoothly, a car that handles well and is safe and reliable. It is a thing that does what we expect it to. We need that of course, but we also need to get it done efficiently so we can profit in our organizations.
