J. Alden Clothiers opened its doors in 1993 in the historic village of Essex, Connecticut. Our intention has always been to offer the finest clothing and furnishings while providing the highest measure of service possible. As the need for our clothing and services increased, we found it necessary to move to a larger location on Main Street in the center of the village.
Since 1993, J. Alden has had the pleasure of outfitting many clients from the Connecticut and Rhode Island shoreline. Our purpose is to make every man that enters our store look the best they possibly can for any setting, be it a professional, social, or wedding occasion. We pride ourselves on getting to know each and every client personally and giving them the best measure of attention possible, all with the confines of a small store setting.

J. Alden's is a great clothing store with an excellent selection for both men and women( and great cards and cigars). Curated selections put together with great taste and panache by James and Amy.
Trust them to dress your husband and yourself. What can I say other than everything we have purchased here has been of superior quality and never fails to receive a compliment. It's the kind of shop where they get to know you and what you like and if it isn't in your size they will order it for you.
When you visit the beautiful town of Essex I highly recommend stopping here and getting lost and finding

I came here while I was visiting Essex for the long weekend. The clothing here was so fancy. The quality of the clothes was top notch and the designs were beautiful too. The prices were really good for the clothings. The whole atmosphere there was that of an old British shop. Maybe also a bit of a Ralph Lauren feel in there. Best of all, he really cares about his shop. He recognized me when I introduced myself, though I had never met him in person.

I put a huge dent in my credit card here. Found some deals as well, but oh my! That being said, the quality is unbeatable. Several brands I typically buy are here and they have a decent inventory all around. I was most impressed by the service. In our case the salesman, who could have been an owner for all I knew, flawlessly helped us find what we were looking for. It was like he had the entire inventory memorized. He had such a nice manner about him. The perfect balance of helpfulness and guidance. I think at least one of my purchases was based upon the comfort I felt with his recommendations

The clothing, decor, and available items were wonderful! The staff and nasty attitudes were deplorable! I'm not sure who exactly they thought they were, or who exactly they thought I was, but needless to say..."Snooty" is an understatement!
I had plenty of money to buy, but felt like a spin-off of the Pretty Woman movie when the sales clerks told her there was nothing in her size. **Big mistake** Lol. I'm exaggerating slightly, but hopefully you get the point.

This is a treasure trove of wonderful men's and women's classic fashion tucked away in Essex - I was so surprised to find so many great looking things! We are semi new to the area, and are just bowled over by the level of personal service we received at the hands of Jim (J. Alden) and his staff. My husband had left a navy blazer behind in CA, and not only did Jim find us another one (my husband is not an easy size to fit), he also handled alterations and delivered it to our home! Beyond amazing, as far as we are concerned - we are customers for life!
