Services
Tattooing professionally since 1999, Darcy most enjoys tattoo work based on Japanese and American traditional, plus anything organic and illustrative. She can also do black & gray semi-realism, stipple, detailed color and intricate linework. Large-scale compositions that are custom tailored to fit the body are her specialty, but she enjoys doing tattoos of any size with some artistic freedom.
Ryan started tattooing in 1998 in the East Bay where he was born and raised. His tattooing career has been built from from his eternal drive and passion to go above and beyond the expectations of his clients and peers. His two amazing kids have taught him the importance of patience, compassion and fortitude over everything else.
Rodney is a regular guest artist at Chalice. He owns Ace Custom Tattoo in Charlotte, NC where he resides. Tattooing professionally since 1997, Rodney is highly versatile and capable of drawing and tattooing pretty much anything that you can think of. Black & gray or full color, sleeves and backpieces or small detailed designs; he can do them all!
For your first tattoo appointment at our shop, regardless if you have been tattooed elsewhere, you will need to bring your valid state issued or military photo i.d. It is also important to get a good night's sleep the evening before and keep yourself hydrated. Drink lots of water and eat a good meal an hour or 2 before you come in.

While visiting a friend in Boise, we decided to see if Chalice had any walk in appointments available. We were both helped by Eddie, and we were very happy with our tattoos. It was my very first one. He was friendly, patient, and super talented! He free-handed the tattoo based on a picture, and he was very kind to tweak my placement so that I was 100% satisfied before he started. Overall I had a very good first tattoo experience!

If you’re looking for one of the best, if not thee best, black and gray artists in the area, go to Derek Schaeffer. Don’t let his quiet nature fool you. He’s professional, expertly skilled, and an amazing artist. He is very thorough and will make sure you’ll get something to be proud to wear for the rest of your life. Derek is a quiet genius with the tattoo needle. My husband and I both recently got tattoos from Derek Schaeffer at Chalice. His designs are beautiful and thoughtful. I booked a mom daughter session about 2 months in advance, sent emails of what we wanted done. When it came closer I was rescheduled with a different artist and time. I called to ask if I could get a rough estimate of what the pieces would cost or what the shop minimum would be, I was told no we do not give out prices you need to talk to artist. When I asked if I could leave a message for the artist I was again told no. When the day came to get tattoos we were 15 min early to our 430 pm appointment we filled out paperwork. I have Derek do my tattoos and he does an amazing job. He makes sure it is exactly what i want before he even starts the tattoo he also throws in some of his ideas to make the tattoo flow and look good. Hes efficent and takes his time. LOVE LOVE LOVE this place!!! The vibe inside is AWESOME with all the artwork hanging from the walls from ALL of the skilled Artists that work inside. My wife and I have both received multiple tattoos from Chalice and they are all amazing artwork! Disregard that one star review left on this Yelp page as its purely out of frustration by someone who doesn't understand the process of receiving a tattoo works. This place is awesome and they take very good care of you while giving you amazing works of art you can look at on your skin forever!

I am 57 and never had a tattoo until today. I researched for a long time. I had many friends recommend not just Chalice but one of the leading tattoo artists in the country, Darcy Nutt. She is in high demand so I lucked out getting her to do my tattoo on short notice. Her art work is exquisite and detailed. Her designs are original. In 2010, I was able to get tattooed by her at the convention. The tattoo ended up winning tattoo of the day.
Since then, my buddy and I have been tattooed by her every year that she has attended the convention.
We have made the 5 hour trip to Boise a few times to get tattooed by her at her shop as well.

This review is a little different then most and it's also for their downtown location. I decided to get a tattoo while visiting family in Idaho and I got a recommendation for Chalice from a tattoo artist friend in Oakland where I'm from. I made the appointment 3 months in advance and then confirmed it two weeks before I went. I got down there a few minutes before my appointment and was surprised that they weren't open yet. I got a tattoo by Derek at Chalice. I came in and wanted a matching tattoo with my best friend. He used the same picture to make two stencils for us, yet they came out completely different. Mine is thicker all around, our colors are off, and he filled in mine where hers was not, without asking. Their website showcases amazing work which is why we didn't hesitate to go there. And he wasn't very friendly to boot. Everyone else there was pleasant, maybe he was just having a bad day. We are not completely unsatisfied, but we do wish that our matching tattoos matched..

If you are going to permanently mark your body you might as well spend the money and do it right the first time. I wish I could give Darcy Nutt 10 stars, she is one of the best tattoo artists in the northwest! Her black and gray portrait work is fierce but she is kills it in all styles/ colors. She's also hard to get into (6-8 months before she can even take an appointment currently) but well worth the wait- I even fly in just to see her from Seattle she's THAT good!
