The ancient ones knew that both boys and girls needed an initiatory rite of passage to consciously transition to manhood and womanhood, so that they could take their rightful place in the tribe or village. One of the important learnings for the boys was how to treat women with respect, how to be good to the earth (mother), and how to use his sexual body in a good way.
Back Story: In late 1996, having been in men's work for more than 10 years, I attended a workshop for men in California. Run by Char Tosi & Marlene Napa, it was titled: Under Your Mother's Pillow. Taken from Robert Bly's Iron John story, it offered men the opportunity to do deep work on mother issues.
In the US, the divorce rate of 1st marriages is 40-50%, the rate for 2nd is 70-80%, 3rd even worse. Marriage promises so much, yet rarely delivers what we want or expect or hope for. Listen to the language of early romance: "You're the only one for me, I've known you all my life, without you I would die."
