Nelson Cheese & Deli
As a local St. Paul company for over 30 years, we appreciate your BUSINESS helping us get through these times with you! Located in St. Paul, Nelson Cheese & Deli is a manufacturer and purveyor of fine foods from all over the midwest. Our story begins in the mid 1850s. Hubert Greenheck, great-grandfather of Edward Greenheck, Nelson's current and fifth generation cheesemaker.

Hubert, his son Arnold, and Arnold's son Albert farmed the green, rolling hills of Bear Valley in southwestern Wisconsin. In 1858 the first cheese factory was opened, and the practice of gathering milk from neighboring farms to make cheese at the local factory began. In 1980 Greg Greenheck, son of Francis, brought this rich tradition of handmade cheeses to the Saint Paul area.

I've been going here for years; really have not found a place that makes a better veggie sandwich and I've tried plenty of options. It would be nice if they had a hot cheese melt type of sandwich/hoagie also so I have more than one thing to choose from but that is a wishlist item and not a complaint. The parking lot can be a challenge during peak hours. Quality is excellent and consistent from visit to visit and the menu items have plenty of good looking options for those who are carnivores. I often pick up some cheese when I am there also.

I had been attempting to try Nelson’s since Sunday, unfortunately the wrong hours were listed on google. I went there today along with my son. I saw the reviews and we both decided to get the torpedo roll, which is the largest sandwich. We got home and anxiously opened our sandwiches. My first bite I could immediately taste the staleness and dryness of the bread and was immediately disappointed. My son immediately said “Mom the bread is not good”. The meat, cheese and veggies is what you would expect at deli. I omitted the bread and had a lettuce wrap. Sadly I would have prepared Subways’

Great little local deli for a fresh salad or sandwich. I was hoping for a few more shopping options outside of the sandwich and salad, as there were just chips, soda and a few types of crackers mostly. A few desserts as well.

AWESOME deli with monster sandwiches. I've tried their BLT and a couple of different turkey sandwiches (I think one was called the California and the other was the Como). I can't believe how much meat they put on those things. There had to be 8 strips of bacon on the BLT.

New favorite.

Great service. No seating. Free parking in back. Fast check out. Small soup cup $3. Cookies $1.50, other desserts are about $3, craft sodas are $2- $3. Expect to spend $8-$12 per adult. Came in from out of town, and wish I lived closer to this place. Love it:)

My parents used to take me here a lot when I was a kid and I loved their sandwiches, so I decided to go back because I'm moving out-of-state soon and wanted to stop by one more time before I leave. I'm so glad I did! The staff were super friendly. I had the Roman sandwich, which was delicious and exactly as I remembered it! The herb mayo is really good and there's a ton of meat and cheese. The sandwiches are really large so I usually split them into two meals. Definitely recommend, they're my favorite sandwich place for sure!

Overjoyed! I have been eating at this place since I was a toddler with my mom! It has had some renovations over the years, but essentially the same menu and fantastic ownership/management!

My mom and I would always get the same thing- the Town of Nelson with pepper jack instead of Swiss. Heaven. I might have tried one other sandwich over the years, but always came back to the "go-to". Maybe it's nostalgia, but I just find it to be the perfect sandwich.

I came here so much at one point (I ended up living around the corner for a while) that the owner would see me walk in and get

Love love love this place. Currently only doing drive up orders- you can either park in the lot behind this small deli or order ahead of time and just pick it up. I went on St. Patty's day, ordered a Rueben and it was (as it always is- my usual sandwich order) super good!!! We also usually get build your own salads... believe me- a small is plenty. It's hard to finish just a small salad let alone the half sandwich I tend to get too ‍

One of the best if not the best sandwich place in the Twin Cities area. Flavorful meat, fresh toppings and curbside pickup during Covid. Can't ask for much more. The cheesemaker is the way to go, and their cookies are not bad either! Make sure to call ahead for pickup as it usually takes 20-30 minutes to prepare.

This place is AMAZING. Their sandwiches taste like your grandma made them back in 1968, but in the best way possible! I've had one curbside order and one delivery order and both were so good. Currently snacking on what's left of the potato salad from my delivery order yesterday because it is the best I've ever had. They even have gluten free bread that is obviously homemade and it's so delicious! HIGHLY RECOMMEND

Ordered a couple sandwiches and potato salad for pick up. The sandwiches we ordered were the Cheese Maker and Manhattan. I'm not sure how big the standard sandwiches are, but these substantial subs are no joke! They are piled high with meat and cheese, and just 1/2 the sandwich was enough to fill me up over lunch. The potato salad is top notch as well with a perfect mustard flavor. I'm looking forward to my next lunch to have the other 1/2 of my sandwich!

*FYI - they are requesting that you call ahead a 1/2 hour for pick up orders.

This place is one of the wonders of the Twin Cities. The food is absolutely top notch. Among my favorite sandwiches are the New Orleans and the Lexington. Salads and pastas are always on point, as well. Not only that, the service is top-notch and friendly. The staff is always friendly and the gentleman with the bushy beard is so warm & welcoming, he treats his customers as if he's known them for years.

Great food, top shelf service- Nelson's is always a joy for me to visit. I eat out frequently and there are few places I enjoy frequenting nearly as much as I do Nelson's.

I love this place. Last winter our then 6 month old was in the hospital for a couple weeks fighting the flu (get your flu shots!). We were exhausted and ready to collapse when the nurse told us about the Ronald McDonald House. We went down to grab a meal and someone had catered in Nelson's!

First off, the catering was beautiful and plentiful! Sandwiches, pasta salads, fruits, veggies and dessert trays! It was amazing. We grabbed a couple sandwiches and some sides...everything was so good!

Fast forward to 9 months later..we remembered and decided to go to Nelson's while we were in

My favorite place to get a deli sandwich in the twin cities (sorry Cecil's).

Highly recommend the "New Orleans" or "Santa Fe."

The sandwiches are large, and very tasty, and the space is extremely clean.

They have lots of options for snacks and sides too, particularly of the cheese variety, but also some European candies as well.

Had some time to kill before going to the conservatory so I stopped in Nelson's for lunch. I had no idea what to order but the guy at the counter recommended a few hot sandwiches that were his favorite so I went with one of those - the New Orleans. It was a great choice! Chicken breast marinated in a slightly spicy sauce topped with pepper jack cheese, bacon, lettuce, tomato, onion, and a bleu cheese sauce on a kaiser roll. DELICIOUS!

Also, as I was waiting for my sandwich I started browsing through their cheese selection. I ended up buying three kinds of cheese and crackers to make a cheese

This could be my favorite place in Minnesota. On a small corner in St Paul near the Como Zoo lies a sandwich and cheese shop that delivers amazing food at a reasonable price.

As a rookie to MN I stumbled upon Thai place looking for fast food for my kids. You wait in a line for amazing sandwiches and salads and as you place your order you work your way through this small shop adding accessories to your meal. Chips, drinks, cookies and candy as well as homemade cheeses of multiple varieties are just some of the sampling's this place offers.

And they kill it! Hot or cold, salad or sandwich
