Mark Gavin moved to Oahu, from New Jersey, in June of 1979. He began doing some house painting and small repairs to make money, as he had done during his college time at Rutgers University. He graduated from Rutgers in 1975, with degrees in accounting and business. As time in Hawaii went on, he acquired more skills and tools, and was able to offer a broader range of services to his clients.
His first "shop" was an open carport, in an old house on Kaimuki Avenue. In 1984, he moved into a house in Kailua, which had an enclosed 2-car garage - major upgrade! In 1989, he moved into a small industrial space on Hamakua Drive, expanded a few times, and began hiring workers to help him with his continuing work.
