Carolina Farm Table, formerly Designs in Wood, is a custom furniture shop which specializes in farmhouse tables, hutches and other hand crafted pieces for the home. John and Penny Ulery began Designs In Wood in 1972 in San Diego, California.
They moved to Sparta in 1980, and bought the remaining half of the old Lowe's Hardware building next to the law enforcement center at the corner of East Doughton and Alleghany Street, where the shop still currently resides.John and Penny exhibited at art and antique shows for 30 years, working with clients all over the United States.

Carolina Farm Table is a family owned business located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. We create quality made furniture by hand. Each table starts with a conversation with you about your needs and aesthetic, then we custom build a table to fit your home and lifestyle. Using new and reclaimed locally sourced lumber, we create farmhouse tables that are filled with character and built to last generations.
Everyday Care- Carolina Farm Tables are water resistant, but water should not be left on the surface for an extended period of time. Our finish is low sheen and low maintenance. No water rings or spots will occur with normal use, unlike wax finished pieces. With our pieces of furniture there is very low upkeep commitment and with regular care they should last years to come.
All lumber is purchased in maximum width and in the rough from local lumberyards. It is carefully selected and milled in our shop. This allows us optimal use of our wood selection, ensuring most of the wood is used in both width and thickness, so there is little waste. We strive to leave as much of the natural character in each piece created.
For every tabletop, we use the hand plane to create a signature look that is truly a craft within itself. The hand plane creates a piece that reflects incredible authenticity. One of the first choices you'll make as we begin to craft your custom farmhouse table is to decide what style and shape fit your needs and vision.
Shipping normally takes 2-4 weeks, depending on your location. We offer "White Glove", in home delivery, throughout the United States, which includes scheduling time of delivery, set up and assembly in your home, complete with debris and packaging removal. Another option is using our furniture freight company which will deliver in 10-14 days direct to a moving company or business.

My husband and I are thrilled with our new dining table and bench from Carolina Farm Table! Yes, I was a bit nervous ordering furniture sight unseen but after communicating with Devin on the phone and through email, I felt confident that I was making the right choice. I knew exactly what I wanted and needed for our dining room. I shopped several stores and websites but could not find anything that fit what I envisioned, until I came across Carolina Farm Table. The wait time to have our gorgeous furniture made was right on with what Devin predicted and we were, as well, very pleased with the delivery

From the very first email everything went very smoothly. The quality and character of my farm table and chairs was outstanding. It was like Devin read my mind. It is absolutely authentically beautiful. I wanted my table made locally here in my native state of North Carolina. It also is a huge plus that they deliver. We were looking for a farm table for our dining room, and we found one that we loved through Carolina Farm Table. Devin and his team were topnotch in everything---communication and fulfillment! We had our table made from solid Cherry and it is absolutely beautiful in every way!!! We cannot recommend Devin and his company enough. They take pride in their work and it shows. It is craftsmanship such as this that is missing in mass manufacturing today. Even the delivery went smoothly and timely. Thanks Devin and all your company's staff!!
