There is not a bad seat in the house. I have been coming here for decades. It is still my favorite place to enjoy live music, partly because everyone else is there for the same reason. Everyone is listening to the music, sometimes dancing as well, depending on the show. You can order food and drinks, and they serve a great brownie with ice cream and chocolate sauce called a wicked Wally.

A hit or miss music venue. The atmosphere and the venue itself is very unique and probably the best thing about the Iron Horse. The drink selection is good (craft beer, mixed drinks, old standards) but sometimes the quality of the beer suffers from old kegs or funky draft lines. Food menu exists but in my experience I'd suggest getting food somewhere else before the show and you will be much happier. Sounds is usually pretty good for the live music and the intimacy of the venue is great.

So we were supposed to see Lord Huron in Holyoke, and due to the weather they moved it to this theater. I was pretty excited, number one to get out of the heat, and number two, I love seeing shows in old theaters. My third favorite thing, was I had street parking literally in front of the doors to the theater
Doors opened on time, everyone was organized and no mass confusion when the doors opened. The seats were comfortable and there were enough staff to not have lines when needing a beverage, who could ask for more.
The sound was amazing for the main act, the opening was off, but that&apos

Good place to see live music. Nice atmosphere and hard-working staff Unfortunately little of the ticket sales get reinvested in maintenance. Last time there two of the three chairs at our table had legs ready to collapse. All payments processed on a single credit card terminal meant we had to wait 20 minutes after the show as they run all slips at once.

Terrific venue for music, but just make sure that's why you're headed there. Staff was polite and clearly working hard, but because every diner sits down for a show and leaves afterward at the same time there can be very slow service at times. Our waitress even explained that they only have one credit card reader despite seating 300+ people!
Weird side note but only two bathrooms as well, at the end of a long narrow hallway in the basement, which creates another logjam.

I attended my first show at the Calvin this past weekend. What a beautiful theater with wonderful acoustics. It could definitely use an overhaul, though. While the lights are kept low, the paint chips and other parts of the theater that require attention are still visible...but it's a gem in the heart of Northampton.
There's a bar area off to the left of the entrance and restrooms are on the second level. The layout of the restrooms is a bit bizarre...if there is a line to get in, you'll need to scoot through that line in order to get a paper towel after you've washed your

I love our little theater in Northampton. There's not a bad seat in the house. Acoustics are Super wherever you sit. It's not a huge place which is what I love as I have come to dislike mega stadium concerts. And being in Northampton means plenty of choices for a good meal before the show.
Sign up for the IHEG e mail to find out who's coming. They get quite the mix of very fine artists and interesting shows.
I go often. See you there!

A notch above A-OK in my opinion. Calvin Theatre (operated by Iron Horse Entertainment, which also operates IronHorse Music Hall, Pearl Street, and Mountain Park venues) is a prominent feature in downtown Northampton and within walking distance of countless shops and restaurants.
While they typically book artists I'm personally unfamiliar with, I recently attended a concert by Boz Scaggs there, and have seen promo for everything from Foreigner to comedian Lewis Black to Elvis Costello to Weird Al Yankovic. So yeah, they pretty much run the gamut.
I'd recommend parking in a nearby garage

A nice theater but some logistical issues make it an odd concert spot. I wasn't expecting to see a full set of movie theater seats when I first walked in. Since we had tickets for the pit, I was worried those in the ground level seats wouldn't be able to see because they're not really elevated. The bar doesn't accept credit or debit cards so bring cash! The location is right in the center of town so you can go for dinner before or after a show.

Saw Kenny Wayne Shepard on 8/28/15. The artist was great, the venue.... sad. The Iron Horse and Calvin Theater has motivated many trips to Northampton from my current home in NH, and if I was ever to move back to Western Mass the music available at these venues would play a big part in that decision. That said this last visit to the Calvin was so bad that I will not return unless there is someone performing that I cannot see anywhere else. In short the sound from the band sounded like mud and the area in which I was sitting smelled like a disgusting uncleaned bar. Funky and worn musical venues

It's an old classic movie theater. (Built in 1924, renovated in 1994) The renovations were done in the '90's to turn this space into a performance space. The theater is admittedly getting a bit long in the tooth, but you still get some amazing shows here. I have seen TMBG/Johnathan Coulton, Weird Al, The Pixies, Rodrigo y Gabriela, Frank Turner, Post Modern Jukebox, Ani, etc... here. Say what you will, this place books the good shows. And you have a very good intimate place to see the show.
That said: The front row is right on the old (filled in) orchestra pit, and is now used for

This place is really pitiful. The owner has done no work to make it a real music hall - basically it's a dirty movie theater with a stage. We came to some show here, had what we thought were front row seats, but then discovered rows of folding chairs were in front of us. I am very short and could not see a thing. We left. It was hopeless. We're back tonight to hear the Irish Rovers. It is definitely even filthier than before. Have yet to hear how the acoustics. The seats are very uncomfortable! The owner would do well to look to the wonderful renovation of the Hanover Theater

Great place -- always a good show and logistics -- whether it was Indigo girls last year or Paula Poundstone. Very respectful audience, but always engaged with the performer and a classic place to showcase talent.
Nicely located in downtown Northampton near many quality restaurants, shops, arts, etc. so you can make a day or evening out of a show.

The Calvin Theatre has that gilded era look to it. Yes, it could use a fresh coat of paint. The seats weren't squished together like some people have commented, standard seat size just like most places. FYI, I'm not here to check on seat size & paint quality, I am hear to listen to great music at a decent ticket price and that's what I got. Its a small theatre so you don't have to squint to see the stage. We sat in Orchestra so we had a clear view. Sound quality was decent. They do have a cash only bar next to the lobby. I would go here again. Note: If you plan

First, I have seen incredible concerts here closer than I ever would have anywhere else. BB King, Train, Rickie Lee Jones, Elvis Costello solo...They can book 'em, however, you would think that being in western Mass with all the non toxic organic gurus, they would use environmental products to clean the place. Ever heard of HYDROGEN PEROXIDE?
I recently saw Hugh Laurie and the Copper Bottom Band here and as I walked in the front door to get my Will Call, it reeked of toxic cleaning agents underdiluted by the cleaning staff. The bleach along with whatever other HORRIBLE instantly asthmatic

We discovered The Calvin Theatre about eight years ago and ever since we scan their concert calendar and make the trip to Northampton a couple times a year. It's a favorite theater of ours and Northampton is a great little town for our date nights. The Calvin motivates us to make it happen! We've seen some great shows there and have discovered some great restaurants within a few blocks of the theater, so it's ideal for getting us to mark our calendars for special times.
It's a charming old theater/ intimate concert venue with decent acoustics/sound and comfortable seating.
