Services
Hamakua-Kohala Health serves the Big Island of Hawai'i by providing accessible, affordable, quality health care and educational services with an emphasis on individual and community wellness. Our locations include health centers in Honoka'a on the Hamakua Coast, Laupahoehoe, Waimea, and in Kapa'au, on the Kohala Coast.
We continue to evolve Hamakua-Kohala Health according to the model of the Patient Centered Medical Home (PCMH) and were awarded National Recognition in 2018 by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) for complying and being a Patient Centered Medical Home, placing patients at the center of the healthcare system, and providing comprehensive primary and preventative healthcare to persons of all ages, that is "accessible, affordable, continuous, comprehensive, family-centered, coordinated, compassionate, and culturally effective."
Hamakua-Kohala Health has been a part of the Hamakua community in one form or another since the early plantation days. Before 1966, every plantation along the Hamakua Coast had its own dispensary - one each in Haina, Pa'auhau, Pa'auilo, O'okala, and Laupahoehoe, serving both outpatients and hospital in-patients.
With coverage spanning from the Hamakua Coast to North Kohala, we are a unique and tested model for medical care - a true safety net for the Big Island's uninsured and medically under-served population. We follow a healthcare model that provides the right care, at the right time, in the most cost-efficient way.
Emergency Medical Services for life threatening emergencies, for example; your child is not breathing, is choking, is unconscious or is having seizures. For minor emergencies (such as dehydration, wounds that need suturing, etc.) contact our offices. The Amazing Tooth Bus is back at Hamakua-Kohala Health's Kapa'au Clinic and is currently scheduling children, including those with QUEST Insurance.

Hamakua-Kohala Health has been serving my family of 6 for many years and now my grandson. Nellie has always had a welcoming smile. They have ALL been so helpful and accommodating. Recently all 7 of us got COVID tests. Dina was so sweet & reassuring filling out lots of forms with us. So fitting of her name..... you could see Angel's smile through lots of PPE. She was so patient with a Kolohe 5 year old not happy to be tested.
You are all huge assets to your employers and our Kohala Community.
These are the type of people and treatment we need to get through this tough time together! Be ready for

This is for the Kohala Family Health Center branch in Kapa'au. I came here after a bad fall. My foot was massively swollen, bruised, and couldn't bear any weight at all. It had been like that for two days.
I was examined by Dr. Elder, who sent me to the hospital to get x-rays. Immediately after taking the x-ray, the technician Scott pointed out that there was a fractured metatarsal. He told me the exact location of the fracture. The x-rays were then sent over to Dr. Elder, who looked at them and told me that there were no fractures. He offered no alternate explanation for my symptoms

I LOVE this place. :) It's thee best. :)
I've been going here since I was a freshman in high school and I've always gotten really good care. The doctors are always very nice and so is the staff. What I love about them is that they can squeeze in appointments for you if needed. A lot of medical places make you wait! (So uncool.)
The one downside is that sometimes it's very SLOW. And you find yourself in the waiting room from anywhere between half an hour, to an hour. =/ Eeeeeek. No one likes to wait for that long at the doctor's office. But, for me, I think it's
