Mats Hellsten, MFT
Feel free to call or email me to talk about your particular situation or needs or any questions you may have. My style as a therapist combines a calm and gentle presence with an active approach to facilitating change. I don't impose theories about how you should be or what you need, but trust in your own inherent wisdom.

At the same time, I actively guide and support you in your process of healing, self-discovery and unfolding. I offer a supportive therapeutic environment in which you can safely and freely explore the issues you bring to therapy. I help you identify, shift and transform unconscious beliefs, negative emotional responses, and self-defeating patterns that cause distress, and thereby find greater wellbeing, fulfillment and empowerment in your life.
Services
I incorporate several therapeutic modalities in my practice, some of which I summarize on the Therapeutic Modalities page. I also place great emphasis on providing a supportive environment in which you can safely explore the concerns you bring to therapy. As part of this, I do my best to maintain a good therapeutic relationship in which you feel deeply understood, accepted and valued.
For anyone interested in knowing more about some of the therapeutic modalities I use, I provide the following brief summaries. Cognitive-behavioral therapy, psychodynamic therapy, and humanistic therapy are three broad therapy traditions that encompass many specific approaches and modalities. Cognitive-behavioral therapy works with maladaptive thought patterns that contribute to emotional distress and dysfunctional behaviors.
My fee for a 50- to 55-minute individual therapy session is $155 (or $150 if you pay by bank transfer). My fee for a 70-minute couple or family therapy session is $185 (or $180 if you pay by bank transfer). I accept some clients in a lower fee range, based on financial need and other factors; feel free to inquire about this.
In 2020 I moved back to Sweden, my native country, after living in the San Francisco Bay Area for 35 years. I continue to maintain my California MFT license and to meet with California clients via video from Malmo, Sweden. To schedule an appointment or if you have any questions, please call my confidential voicemail at (510) 859-4475 or email me at matsMFT@gmail.com.

Not a good experience for me. Not sure where the $170 for 3 hours in another review came from, but I paid $140 for 50 minutes.

He was not flexible with rescheduling appointments. It wasn't something he was not up front about, but be prepared to pay full price for cancellation without 48 hours notice.

Overall, the whole experience of trying to work with him only added to my stresses and pushed me closer to a breakdown. Not a good thing in this line of work, I'd say.

"We repeat what we don't repair."

My very first therapy session was at a well-known facility. The only problem was that the modalities were too cookie-cutter-like for me. Although we were able to narrow things down and everything went okay, I didn't really connect with that person. So I figure I'd give it another try with someone else that would best suit my needs.

Mats practice is a whole different ball game. He's very professional, kind, and is very empathetic. Most importantly, he's one hell of a problem solver. It was very easy to open up to him. It&apos

Wow, Mats definitely deserves more rave reviews for his counseling expertise.

I'll do my small part here.

My family has been going through catastrophic changes with a string of divorces and high dysfunction. It was beyond words to watch your own father self-destruct and watch his wallet get torn through his loins through alimony--all while all his children can only watch the carnage.

Seeking the wisdom to create a divergent path, I took my time to find a counselor that I could connect with. I particularly wanted a male counselor as I felt more comfortable that way. There's less explanation

I know Mats as a fellow therapist, and I've referred several clients to him. We have done psychotherapy trainings together over the years, where I've had the chance to observe and experience his work. I have found Mats to be a kind, gentle, wise and extremely capable therapist. I appreciate how he listens with great care, and how thoughtful and considerate he is in response. I have experienced this as a practice client, from personal interactions, and also from observing how he interacts with others. He is able to ask questions that help me consider the situation in a new light, to slow
