Homemade sauce with our secret mix of seasonings. Dough that's made fresh every morning. Specialty meats and real mozzarella cheese. The sounds of crisp crust being cut into perfectly-sized squares. That's what you'll find in our kitchen at Sammy's Pizza. Sammy's Pizza & Deli was opened in 1958 by Jim and Marguerite (Perrella) Acheson - and has remained in the family ever since.
Today, the restaurant is owned and operated by the son of the original owners, Mike Acheson. Our menu features award-winning pizzas, pastas, appetizers, subs, calzones, broasted chicken, salads and desserts. In 2015, PMQ Pizza Magazine, the pizza industry's No. 1 publication, inducted Sammy's into its Pizza Hall of Fame - which pays tribute to popular pizzerias in business for 50 years or longer.

Services
Our family tradition began more than 67 years ago with Sam Perrella - or as we like to call him, Grandpa Sam. As World War II soldiers returned home from Italy telling tales of their favorite food, the popularity of pizza in the U.S. grew. Sam Perrella, a former miner who owned a small cafe in Keewatin, picked up on this growing trend.
A welcomed addition to any freezer, our frozen pizzas are made with the same signature sauce, fresh ingredients and artistry as those served in our restaurants. Gift them to a fellow Sammy's lover - or even yourself (we don't judge). They are readily available for purchase in the restaurant in a variety of options and we also can take custom orders 24 hours in advance.

If I could give a zero rating, I would. Besides the food being borderline bad (how do you screw up pizza this much?) called to order (since their crap website wouldn't open on any device) the family meal special which is 35.95. ASKED if we could make one substitution which is typically a dollar difference if ordered individually (wings for 11.45/lb instead of drum sticks at 10.45/lb) and offered to pay that difference and THEY AGREED to do the substitution only to arrive and be charged the full price for every item PLUS not given the sodas which are part of the deal. Will never buy from here

Two guys were in the kitchen when I visited on May 20, 2021. They were remarkable guys! I live in Florida and bought a couple of frozen pizzas. They were being transported 70 miles and the managing pizza chef packaged them perfectly for the ride. Midwesterners are really thoughtful and nice. Thanks for taking the time that you took to explain all that you did in helping me make my pizza selection.

I grew up watching the dough fly through the air in the window in West Duluth as a youth.
I sat in the booth with your own personal jukebox at the end of the table.
All you really needed was a big Sammys sausage pizza a soda and a big smile.
Now I live by Lake Superior
Disappointing as this is to say lakeside Sammy's has forgotten to put the extra cheese on there crew Pizza the last several times we have ordered.
I guess you have to ask for extra cheese on it so they can tell you what comes with it and then maybe they'll put it on there.
Dry, No cheese!
The box might have had more flavor

I just called ten minutes before close. Got an amazing pizza delivered when most places would tell me no. Plus, the pizza is amazing. Thanks Sammy's.
Edit: can't leave two reviews. Pizza still amazing. It is common in town for people to tell you that Sammy's is only good when you order from a particular location and my location would be Lakeside. Consistently hot perfect every time and one of the only delivery people who are nice enough to actually bring it to your door these days. Honestly how pizza delivery used to be and how it should always be. Again, thanks Sammy's.
Edit 2: again. Consistently

Picked up a small sausage pizza and large one with tomatoes, onions and peppers the moment we got into town for the weekend. I noticed another order with a salad waiting to be delivered when we arrived. It looked so good, I added a salad to our order. Got the vinaigrette dressing to go with it. Pizza and salad were very tasty and just what I was craving after a long drive from the twin cities. The 4 of us will eat the leftover slices in the morning. It’s a round pizza cut I to small square slices. So tasty. Enthusiast staff treated us right.

Just tried Sammy's for the first time with mixed reviews from my husband and myself. I was looking forward to it after hearing from some friends who recommended it. We got a large house special to eat on the way back from a weekend in Grand Marais. The crust is fantastic; thin and crispy with a great chewy texture. But the sauce was nonexistent! First there was hardly any sauce on it and what there was had no flavor! We like a zesty pizza sauce with plenty of Italian herbs and spices and garlic in it so it sets off the great topping flavors. Not crazy about the flavorless ground beef on it

I had been away from Duluth for several years, so I was salivating, just thinking about the many Sammy's pizzas my family and I had enjoyed in the past. I decided to ring up Sammy's for a delivery. The pie was delivered in a timely manner. The total charge seemed a bit high-- nearly $30 for a family size pizza, including delivery tip. I always tip the delivery person.
As for that pie: the red pepper flakes and parmesan requested were not present. No prob! I always carry spare condiments in my purse! The appearance of the pie was a let down after getting myself all worked up. The pie

Yum yum yum.
The Good
The pie was scrumptious! We ordered a plain old Italian sausage and loved every morsel. We had it delivered to our hotel on canal park and they were pros.. Took my hotel name and room number and BAM! They were there with a piping hot pie!!
This is an old fashioned thin crust (think 1978 pizza parlor) cut into little squares with a piece of sausage on each little square.
We got a large 16 inch pie with sausage for $23, $27 with tip. We sat on our balcony and watched he ships while we ate.
The bad:
Get plates and napkins from your hotel bc they didn't bring any

Love Sammy's Pizza, but this location stinks. 4-Meat was all hamburger. Such little cheese all the toppings fell off. I will drive to another location rather than coming here. Have tried to order extra sauce, extra cheese and it still comes the same way. They charge for the extra toppings though! Locations are individually owned and this owner is tight with the extras. Recommend any Sammy's but this location.

As long as I can remember, this pizza shop has been a part of my family's life, and checking their online bio, I see they opened when I was about 6. I don't remember exactly when my family started to buy pizzas, they'd call ahead, my dad would go and pick up (no delivery back then) and prior to that (and for a time after, I can imagine) family pizza nite meant a Chef Boyardee mix out of a box - contents were pizza dough mix, a can of tomato paste and small envelopes of powdered cheese and herbs.
It was pretty awful. Whereas Sammy's is spectacular, and a Minnesota favorite

Stopped by Sammy's for a late lunch while visiting Duluth - what a gem. I had a mini pizza with two toppings and a drink for $3.95. Probably the best bang for the buck I have ever had. Pizza was made to order and I would have paid a few bucks more and still been satisfied.
Looking forward to my next visit to Duluth and eating great pizza at Sammy's on the cheap.
