The toe is forced to bend toward the others, causing an often painful lump of bone on the foot. Because this joint carries a lot of the body's weight while walking, bunions can cause extreme pain if left untreated. The MTP joint itself may become stiff and sore, making even the wearing of shoes difficult or impossible.
Diabetics are prone to poor circulation, have a weakened immune system and impaired nerve function in their feet. Due to poor circulation, diabetic feet are more susceptible to developing sores, and non-healing wounds which may lead to ulcers. These wounds can also develop into serious infections which can lead to amputations, loss of limbs and even loss of life.
Many of my patients present with foot or ankle injuries. These injuries could be the result of simply tripping on the stairs, stepping on a foreign object while barefoot or from playing their favorite sports activity. At our practice we treat a wide variety of foot and ankle injuries including: fractures sprains of the foot and ankle or tendon problems which can be very painful and disabling.
You may be suffering from a condition called hammertoes. Hammertoes occur due to a contracture of the small joints in the toe which causes friction to these joints when wearing shoes. When the top of the toe repeatedly rubs against the shoe a corn develops. Conservative treatment for hammertoes consists of wider shoes, padding and injection therapy.
