Highlands Community Services has provided mental health, substance abuse, and developmental services to the residents of Washington County and Bristol, VA for over forty years. HCS is dedicated to discovering, implementing, and sustaining valuable services that assist our community and those who live in it. What will you find here at HCS? Highlands Community Services is committed to "improving lives and discovering possibilities" by providing the highest quality continuum of behavioral health care, creating a center of excellence for all individuals seeking mental health, substance use or developmental services. Highlands Community Services is dedicated to discovering, implementing, and sustaining valuable services that improve lives.
President Kennedy requested a "bold, new approach to solve the problems of mental illness." Local governments established The Community Mental Health and Mental Retardation Services Board of Washington Co. and the City of Bristol VA. The Board changed its name to Highlands Community Services and soon relocated its offices.
Providing a detailed person-centered plan to individuals with significant limitations in intellectual functioning and adaptive behavior before age 18, as well as infants and toddlers with delayed development from birth to age three. Providing short-term help with long-term impact to consumers with significant substance abuse or emotional challenges that do not warrant hospitalization.
HCS Adult Recovery Services provide a comprehensive community support system for people in mental health and substance use recovery. These individuals require guidance, training, considerable support in preventing hospitalizations, help accessing needed resources and in maintaining a natural support system through meaningful relationships.
The Children's Advocacy Center of Highlands Community Services leverages the efforts of law enforcement, prosecutors, medical and mental health providers, social workers, and others to provide a seamless, comprehensive system of support for child victims of sexual and physical abuse, and neglect.

The CAC provides forensic interviewing and recording in a child-friendly place, as well as recorded interview distribution to law enforcement, child protective services and prosecutors.The CAC offers specialized counseling designed to meet the needs of child victims of abuse, their siblings and non-offending caregivers.

Mental health care is bad enough in our area without having to jump through hoops to prove you are struggling. No wonder so many people don't get professional help with this kind of situation.

Was told I could not get help with withdrawal from benzos and that it could take up to 6 months before I might see a psychiatrist. Not good.

They have some awesome counselor's . HCS is very friendly very supportive and understanding.
