The Eureka, Nevada Historical Society designated a number of sites in the town and surrounding area to be included in a self guiding tour. Numbers have changed a few times over the years and some of the structures are no longer in existence. Eureka is not a ghost town. These sites are privately owned and most are still in use.
Mr. Piggott shared his photos and a story of a few of his travels in the Eureka area with us below. We think a personal touch makes the history more interesting. My first visit to Eureka, in the spring of 2019, was an intriguing experience. Captivated by the deep history of mining and ranching in the Diamond Mountains and Diamond Valley, and because that first visit was only over a short weekend, I had the urge to return to learn more.
Continued from the dialog begun on Eureka Mines. Unbeknownst to us at the time, we were apparently following the route of the old Belmont-Tybo-Eureka stage coach line, which ran in the 1870s and 1880s connecting the towns of Belmont, Tybo and Eureka. Eureka was, in its day, a focal point for numerous stage lines connecting the railroad in Austin with Belmont, Tybo, and Hamilton and even as far away as Pioche.
The slideshow below shows the building progression from approximately the same spot over time. You see the construction proceeding nicely. We are now open for business at the new location at 901 North Main St. Eureka. Eureka is a well-preserved historic mining town, established in 1864 and situated on Highway 50, "The Loneliest Road in America."
Ruby Hill mining area was first discovered in 1869. By early 1870s, a small mining camp developed and in 1873 a post office was opened. In 1875, the Ruby Hill Railroad began operations, used primarily to deliver ore to smelters in nearby Eureka. This railroad was in operation before the Eureka & Palisade reached Eureka.
