Our team's focus is on the delivery of excellent quality veterinary medicine and surgery exclusively for the special needs of birds. The Medical Center for Birds staff has been serving the bird community for over 30 years and has been a leader in raising the standards of medicine and surgery. With the opening of our new facility over 10 years ago, we are now even more equipped to care for our patients.
A quieter, bird-only atmosphere and the addition of new diagnostic and surgical equipment, suited just for birds, allows us to more comfortably house and treat your bird. You have many options available to get help for these birds in the greater bay area. At MCFB, we may triage and at times try to stabilize these birds, but we also know that rehabilitation and release if possible will be best accomplished by licensed rehabilitation facilities.

We are fortunate to have the in-house ability to perform hematology, with two of our registered technicians very familiar with these procedures. This offers us the ability, when needed, to obtain immediate results to help make quick decisions for patient care.
Because birds have nucleated red blood cells (that is, each red blood cell has a nucleus whereas mammal red blood cells do not), automatic complete blood count (CBC) analyzers cannot assess avian hematology.Sometimes inconsistency can be a problem with large regional reference laboratories because different technicians can interpret blood cell types differently, as well as potential variations in methods used.

Fluoroscopy is a type of real-time radiograph (x-ray) which displays on a video monitor. This adds a third dimension of time to ordinary x-rays and allows us to distinguish foreign bodies in the GI tract. With the addition of barium contrast agents, this allows us to watch the GI tract in motion.
Also, since the unit is mounted on a flexible C-arm and does not use film, we can take pictures while your bird is comfortably perched and unaware of what is being done. This is a great asset when we need to take images, but the patient is too sick to undergo anesthesia or withstand the stress of restraint.

Established clients whose birds are current on their annual examinations and biannual bloodwork are welcome to board their birds with us. Please check with our staff prior to boarding to make your reservation. If you prefer to bring your own cage please coordinate with our front staff, as we can occasionally accommodate smaller cages.
Busy Beaks Academy is the behavior and training branch of the Medical Center for Birds, working very closely with the patients and staff to provide low-stress veterinary care and positive reinforcement based training. My 20-year-old green cheek conure developed cancer (a cloacal carcinoma) and I brought her into this medical center for treatment. She received two months of chemo (2 doses every three weeks) and in the third month, she went in for surgery. Two months later, she has no remergence of cancerous or cystic tissue. It cost me 3000$ to get her full treatment and, despite the stress for me and both of my birds, every dollar was worth it. My green cheek may now happily live to 30 years old, only because of Dr Baden and Dr Speer. Dr Baden administered chemo to her and both doctors partook in her surgery

I have total confidence in the staff and in particular Dr. Speer. They are very professional, friendly, informative, non-judgmental (yes, I can do better with my bird's diet) and although I live far from the hospital, it was, and is, totally worth the trip. If your bird needs special care this is definitely the place to go.

The level of service here is unparalleled.
I found an abandoned green cheek over 3 years ago. Recently she became very I'll.
After doing some research online, I knew MCB was the place to take her. From the beginning of her stay, to the end of her stay, my bird received the best care possible. She was in ICU over the Thanksgiving holiday. Eventhough they were closed, someone went in to check on her. I was sent updates via text, including pictures. I was called with regular updates also. Someone even drew a portrait of her. I wholeheartedly believe they saved my bird's life and I'm eternally grateful

I love how much they care and really give the birds a good vet experience. Nothing is forced but its a playful and good time for the bird & owner! I got my Scarlet Macaw girl microchipped and this is the clinic I would go to any time she has health issues. I also got some valuable advice regarding to behavioral training & health supervision. Highly recommended!
