First Mercy Hospital, 1873; located in the Mechanics Academy Building (built in 1842) on Linn Street. Mercy Hospital was founded in 1873 by four Sisters of Mercy who traveled from Davenport, Iowa, by train, carrying as many furnishings and medical supplies as they could manage.

They came at the invitation of Dr. W.F. Peck, dean of the young Medical School of the State University of Iowa, who wanted the Sisters to establish a hospital in Iowa City.Such a hospital would provide a facility where medical students could gain clinical experience and the Sisters could pursue their mission of caring for the poor and sick.

Intentionally billed CHAMPVA insurance wrong and then sent me the entire bill to foot. Nice try, I can claim with my insurance myself. Next time, bundle everything done in an appointment instead of trying to bill them out separately. LMAO.
Before posting this review I called the number that they’ve replied. Surprise! No answer. Just go in person. 😂

In order to return to Canada I had to get a PCR test, unfortunately the first one I got would have expired before I got on my connecting flight in Chicago so I had to go back and get a second test. Being Canadian I am not used to a hospital charging for anything, but visitors to Canada have to pay for their test here before they can go home so it wasn't really all that bad at US120/test.

11/16/21 update: Spoke to billing again to try and resolve the issues. They were already working on sending me to collections. Even though I was making monthly payments. Asked them to just send me to collections. Pathetic hospital... never again.
Went in for two services back in May. Was billed from 3 separate companies... Horrible experience with the billing department. I've been making so many payments. That even their system isn't sure what payments I have made thus far. Paid off balances, still show up in the system as being owed. Which in the long term will hurt my credit... Even though I

I went in and talked to a PA, I sat on a gurney in a hallway and was charged $5,000 for a "service level 4." I called the billing department and asked about what a "service level 4" is and got nothing in response. I tried for over 4 weeks, l left voicemails, hung out on the phone for hours and I was given no response nor answers. Cash grab operation if I have ever seen one. This is a predatory practice hospital.

its waste of time and money to visit Mercy .
and after now 7 months of follow up with billing department, I'm still waiting

After an hour in the ER waiting room they billed me nearly $2,000 for a 5 minute conversation with a doctor. That just about summarizes everything wrong with our healthcare system, doesn't it?

ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE BILLING DEPARTMENT.
Received a phone call 8 months after son's birth that said I owed money for his birth. Since I had never received I asked for a printed bill with itemization so I could call my insurance since I have two insurances (which included Medicaid which means I shouldn't have a bill) and to update my current address since they had my old address (we had moved 2 months previous to the phone call). After 3 weeks I called to check the status of the bill and found out they hadn't updated my address and mailed to wrong one. Called a month later and found out they again

Patient beware!! The billing department is horrible! Read your statements and check your account very carefully before paying them. I have been overcharged very large amounts multiple times. Two of these times I did pay the second bill, only to realize the mistake later and had to ask for my money back. They will not credit back the card you paid with and in the first incident it took almost 60 days before I received my check. Additionally, the person who said they would call me back and was nice enough (I thought) to even give me a direct connection, NEVER CALLED OR RETURNED MY CALLS. The second

Awful. I went because of extremely severe foot pain. They offered me a wheelchair to take me back to the er but didn't help me into it or out of it and onto the bed. Was there for four hours and the only time I saw somebody was when they came to ask me what was wrong. During that whole time I saw someone for maybe 15 minutes combined. The person next to me was is obvious extreme pain and they basically ignored her and didn't help her. Finally at the end they said I just had arthritis (which I am positive is the wrong diagnosis)and gave me crutches to use but told me nothing about how to care for

I was here for three hours for an X-ray. Multiple people who arrived 20-30 minutes after me in the waiting room got in before me. I was left in the room for 30 minutes at a time, three different times. Never told where they were going/how much longer it would be/what was going on. I was treated like the pain I was feeling was dramatic and they didn't believe me.

My husband and I were RV traveling when he became sick. I took him to the ER here and he received excellent care. The doctor and nurses were very professional. My husband and I are both retired nurses so we know good care. Plus the security guard helped me park our 29 foot motorhome in a secure place. Everyone was very caring and helpful.

Took my young son to the ED for a laceration. We were put in a room with BLOOD on the bed. This is with my son with an open wound. Absolutely inexcusable. The provider was horrified and cleaned it up. They were so busy that we had to assist in the closure of his wound. Never will we set foot here ever again. Billed over $2000 for some glue on my son's head and a horrifying experience. One more thing, I contacted the hospital about this incident and no one returned my message.

Probably the worst hospital cafeteria I have ever seen. Cold tasteless food with very limited choices. I guess the lack of scrub clad patrons should have been a clue.

Here at mercy er and treated like I was bothering them. I'm still having chest pains and they just don't care.

I don't care if you have patient advocates they don't make a difference. The problems are still happening.

I would rather wait at the University of Iowa for 6 hours than come back here again.

I was still in pain so i went to the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics the did an ultra sound and now I need surgery.
Told my doctor about my unpleasant experience and she said that she had used Mercy ER and was treated the same way.
I find this very sad. This was

I can't speak to the services provided by physicians and health care professionals; however, the cafeteria here is fantastic. Restaurant quality cheeseburgers for around $2 and a salad bar with plenty of other food and drink options available, this place is an absolute steal.

Last week I went to the Emergency Room at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. The hospital was easy to find. The emergency room entrance was easy to get to. There was abundant parking close by.

We entered and were immediately attended to by a cheerful person at one of the many check-in windows.

After my previous experience, I thought I should ask how long it might be before I could see a doctor.

"It's an emergency room, so right away," she responded smiling, but also looking a little perplexed.

I would give this review a zero if it was available.

The day after Christmas my 90-year-old grandmother had to go to the hospital for pain in her knee. Upon arrival at the ER she was forced to sit in the waiting area for nearly 6 hours while listening to other patients cry for help and plead for assistance to no avail. Drs would show up and leave for hours at a time and provided no help just bc it was "the busiest night in 10 years".

After speaking with 3 ER doctors my grandmother spoke the truth of her situation that she didn't fall but instead she just had extreme pain and didn

I would like to preface this (soon to be very negative) review by saying that I don't think Mercy has incompetent doctors. So, I want it to be clear that my disappointment and anger with Mercy is with the hospital itself, and not any individual doctor.

That said, Mercy is, in my experience, horribly run. No one seems to have even the faintest clue what is going on within their own department, let alone with other departments. I realize that the EEG/sleep lab is not technically the same office as the neurology office, but given the fact that almost everyone who has to get an EEG will then

Going to write a lil different quick review then expected.
Not for the hospital, but for the cafeteria.

Its not your typical "hospital food" as you'd gather and known for.
There used to be an entire wall of plaques, awards, and articles on the head chef before they recently remolded.
The cafeteria is on the lower level and is a hidden secret to grab a good cheap lunch.

It is set up in several stations. The made to order grill area with burgers, fries, sandwiches, chili, beef stew etc. Then the pick and choose ala carte sides. A main entree station with various dishes to choose
