Psychotherapy and Mindfulness-Based approaches are two potent forces for change and growth. We call on them when stuck in vicious circles of escalating stress and when wanting to move toward more enriching ways of living. Dr. Marty Lumpkin is a licensed psychologist with years of experience in both psychotherapy and mindfulness. He has undergone intensive training in mindfulness-based approaches since getting his Ph. D. in psychology.
Services
One mindfulness image is likened to the flow of water cascading into a calm pool of water: Filling the body with full breathing through the nose, into the lifted chest, and down into the diaphragm as breath fills and falls, fills and falls. Following the feel of the breath closely, seeing when mental distractions pull you away, and gently returning to awareness of breathing.
Psychotherapy is perhaps the most intimate way human beings work together toward psychological healing and growth. For it to work, the client needs to experience a relationship of trust, hope, and nonjudgmental understanding from the therapist. People work in therapy to the degree they feel the therapist is concerned about them and mutually engaged in the task of deeply understanding the nature of the problem.
Mindfulness is an umbrella term for a number of related things. First and foremost, mindfulness is a state of wide awake attention tuned into present experiences. This is different from being lost in thoughts or other distractions from this present moment. We tend to live in a light trance of mental chatter, self commenting, or going over the past or the future.
