Medicare is a federal health insurance program designed for seniors and people with specific disabilities. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) oversees and manages Medicare. You receive disability benefits from the Social Security Administration (SSA) or the Railroad Retirement Board (RRB), regardless of age.
Medicare can seem complicated at a first. If we break it down into 4 parts, it becomes clear what coverage is provided and what your options are. Part A is hospital Insurance. This happens automatically and there's no premium as long as you've worked a minimum of 10 years or 40 quarters and paid your Medicare taxes.
Part A covers inpatient hospital, skilled nursing facility, hospice, and eligible home health care. Part A-covered hospital services include medically necessary services and equipment to treat your condition. Medicare Part A offers coverage in time periods called "Benefit Periods".

These "Benefit Periods" begin the day you are admitted as an inpatient in a hospital and ends when you have not been an inpatient in either a hospital or skilled nursing facility for 60 consecutive days. There is no limit to the number of benefit periods. You usually don't pay a monthly premium for Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance) coverage if you or your spouse paid Medicare taxes for a certain amount of time while working.
This is an all-in-one alternative to Original Medicare. These plans are bundled and include coverage for Part A, Part B, usually Part D, and are offered by private insurance companies. These types of plans are managed care, like HMO and PPO plans, which use a network of doctors and hospitals.

Medicare Advantage Plans may have lower out-of-pocket costs than original Medicare and typically offer additional benefits such as vision, dental, hearing, or health and wellness programs at no extra cost.Note: Medicare Advantage Plan (Part C) is NOT the same as Medigap policy (Medicare Supplement).
Medicare Part D Plans are Medicare regulated private insurance drug plans that give you lower cost on prescriptions. Once you enroll in a Medicare Part D plan in your state, you will now pay a set copay instead of the full cost of the prescription drug. The average Part D premium in 2020 is $34/month and the standard deductible is $435 per year.
