Located in historic downtown South Orange, CBH Architects was founded in 2009 as Barnett Design Build, a home improvement construction company. In 2011, we began offering architectural services. By 2013, as our design projects increased, we hung up our tool belts to focus exclusively on residential architecture.
With the addition of Sean Hilgeman and the promotion of Mike Cuttitta, we became CBH Architects in 2016. Mike is a graduate of the College of Architecture and Design at NJIT, with a BS in Architecture and minor in History, He was an Edward J. Bloustein Distinguished Scholar and part of Albert Dorman Honors College.

This majestic home in Maplewood, NJ's had a somewhat out-dated kitchen and family room. The remodel opened up the family room with more light and created a restaurant-style open kitchen with adjacent seating banquet. Family Room beyond features new Dutch-door entrance to driveway on one side and French door sliders to the grilling deck on the other side.
This center hall colonial had served its owners well for years, but when they were ready for a new main bedroom suite, new laundry room mudroom and front entry, we were ready for the challenge Galaxy Building, In House Photography. The newly designed portico provides fresh, bright posts and trim with contrasting warm wood front door and gentle arched ceiling.
The couple that purchased this 1960s home in Monclair, NJ were originally not fans of some of the Hollywood "glam" elements. We worked with them to preserve some of the more salient features while providing more contemporary updates enabling them to stamp their own unique style to the home. Our client already had a beautiful home. However, the lack of a family room combined with an awkward back entrance meant it was time to create an addition. With a new family room, deck, mudroom, powder room, home office, and remodeled kitchen the back portion of this home became as gracious and spacious as the formal dining room, living room and foyer.

CBH Architects competed both the design and construction drawings for my finished basement. They worked with me to squeeze in a ton of functionality, utilizing as much space as possible. The footprint of my basement is relatively small, but we managed to include a laundry room, exercise room, large entertainment area with bar, full bath with steam sauna, and ample closet space and storage throughout. A design that turned my submarine of a basement into a yacht. They collaborated well with the general contractor I chose, working together to adjust and adapt the design when obstacles arose. We hired Bob and Mike for a major renovation that included a new open kitchen, a new mudroom, addition of a new guest bathroom and laundry room upstairs and a new basement. The whole process took us about a year and half, and we couldn’t have done it without Bob and Mike’s help. Bob and Mike started our job with a detailed existing condition assessment and sent us drawings to discuss on all the design possibilities and options. They listened carefully about our vision of the house, and came up with thoughtful design ideas that match with our expectations. During construction, there were a couple
