Igniting a movement to advance just and diverse perennial grain agriculture at a global scale. To ensure a plentiful food supply in the face of future climate-related challenges, scientists must diversify food crops by domesticating. The Land Institute launched its third and largest civic science project with a new perennial wheat program.

The Land Institute is a science-based research organization working to develop an alternative to current destructive agricultural practices. Our work is dedicated to advancing perennial grain crops and polyculture farming solutions.
Founded as a nonprofit organization in 1976, The Land Institute is committed to researching and developing food production methods that sustain the land and soil, a precious resource in an increasingly precarious state around the globe. The history of Earth-abuse through agriculture has been horrendous.

Natural ecological systems are self-sustaining. For at least 10,000 years, humans have disrupted those systems and kept them in a continuous state of disruption in order to feed our populations and avoid famine. This, in a nutshell, is agriculture as we know it. Increasingly, the modern scale of those agricultural disruptions threatens to collapse the critical cultural and natural systems upon which we depend.
The Interns at The Land Institute are extraordinarily capable, interesting, and committed. They serve a critical role in fulfilling our shared mission, contributing as staff team members to our work on perennial crops, research to achieve ecological intensification, and ecosphere studies.
Research Residents, a new intern classification in 2019, are primarily selected from individuals who completed the regular TLI intern program and express a strong desire to delve into our research to a greater depth, ultimately moving on to attend graduate school. Our interns gain valuable insight into the research programs of The Land Institute while assisting in the fields, seed processing facilities, and labs.

The Land Institute is working on a solution to one of humankind's most critical challenges: How to produce food while regenerating precious soil, water, and ecological resources. The long-term, game-changing nature of our mission is both challenging and fulfilling. Our people reflect the values of the prairie: diverse and perennial.
