In a Utopian world, every person would be treated the same in all circumstances. Unfortunately that is not the world we live in. People have biases, and when those biases are brought into the workplace, some individuals or groups may be unfairly treated and in some cases harassed. In the United States, title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 guarantees certain legal protections.
The 1st Amendment of the United States Constitution guarantees the right of religious freedom to all Americans. This right is extended to the workplace, where harassment or discrimination of a person who holds particular religious beliefs is deemed illegal. The prohibition applies to adherents of the world's major religions, and also to those who hold other sincere religious beliefs, for example, Wiccans or Atheists.
It has been a long time coming, but American society is coming to accept that sexual orientation is simply a personal preference that needs to be respected. The amount of states allowing same sex marriage is a reflection of the changing attitude toward the LGBT community. Although we have made tremendous strides in the direction of tolerance of these differences, discrimination still exists.
