Staub Design, LLC was founded to design, build and bring to market high quality multi-family housing. Our prior experiences with a wide range of building materials and methods have convinced us that the quality of residential construction can be raised without increasing costs, by building with Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (AAC) and integrated concrete floors.

We see high quality affordable housing as a key component for improving the physical and economic health of people. We are driven to improve the health, safety, economic security, and comfort for all. John is president of Staub Design, LLC. John grew up remodeling houses. He is an energy economist focused on modeling international long-term energy supply and demand.

Staub Design, LLC is a residential design and build company focused on the application of Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (AAC) – a lightweight concrete building material. Our primary goal is to create an integrated product that is architectural stunning and diverse, healthy, environmentally responsible, comfortable, safe and economically competitive in all market segments.
The buildings described in this section highlight several applications ideally suited to AAC. They are by no means the only architectural styles conducive to building with AAC. Rather they are meant to demonstrate how houses we are all familiar with can be built with AAC. A second factor in choosing these specific styles is the reason they are so prolific in America.
Bungalows are known for their small size, efficient use of space and attention to detail. The traditional bungalow has a one-story appearance with a large, relaxing porch. Often a second story is tucked under the roof with the help of dormers. After 100 plus years of refinement, they are still popular because of their diversity and affordability.
The 1950's era duplex typically consisted of two small ranch houses butted together on one side. They provided less expensive housing which could be interspersed in a neighborhood of single family houses. However, a duplex can be much more. In urban settings with narrow deep lots, rowhouses often have a basement apartment referred to as an in-law suite, garden apartment, or English basement.
Here we show several steps in building garages and carriage houses with AAC. This particular garage was built in South Dakota where the ground typically freezes two to three feet deep. To prevent soil heaving damage, a four foot high stem wall was poured on top of footings. The stem wall was a poured in place concrete wall eight inches thick and four feet high, with rebar for reinforcement.
