Ohana Eye Center
With the formation of a cataract, activities like reading, bowling, or driving can be difficult. Fortunately, vision can be restored quickly, allowing the patient to return home within a few hours. The cornea is a part of the eye that helps focus light to create an image on the retina. It works in much the same way that the lens of a camera focuses light to create an image on film.

Our highly skilled staff welcome you to a modern practice that prides itself on old-fashioned respect and quality customer service. Dr. Chu is a comprehensive ophthalmologist (EyeMD/surgeon) whose practice is based primarily in Honolulu. Your Ohana Eye Center Eye Doctor, Dr Douglas F. Chu is a Specialist in Cataracts, Dry Eye, LASIK, Eye Examinations and Eyeglasses.
Services
The ideal patient has not had a change in their prescription within the last year. This does not exclude candidacy for other patients who also may qualify. The surest way of defining your ability to fully benefit from LASIK, is to have your eyes examined. The LASIK advantage is to greatly reduce or completely eliminate your need for corrective eyeglasses.
Once your eye has been painlessly anesthetized, a comfortable device to prevent blinking will be situated between your eyelids. In less than a minute, while you are focused on a target' light, the laser painlessly reshapes your cornea. Once the protective flap is properly repositioned, your incision will then securely and quickly bond stitch-free.
To correct astigmatism, the cornea must be made more spherical. By changing the pattern of the beam, more tissue is removed in one direction than the other. The CustomVue Map is derived from technology first developed to correct distortions of light waves from space. This allows researchers to accurately view images of stars and planets.
This section is a compilation of patient information developed by manufacturers and healthcare professionals, but it cannot replace the dialogue you should have with us. Read this information carefully and discuss your expectations with us. If you wear contact lenses, it is a good idea to stop wearing them before your baseline evaluation and switch to wearing your glasses full-time.
By having a consultation and eye examination at our office, our doctor will be able to determine if you are a good candidate for laser vision correction. Patients who are at least 18 years of age, have healthy eyes that are free from retinal problems, corneal scars, and any eye diseases are generally suitable.

I love Dr. Chu and Ohana Eye.

I've been going once a year to the dr. rather than an optometrist for vision checks due to my chances of developing heredity eye disease that can lead to blindness.

Some have been less than personable or thorough.

Once I found Dr. Chu in 2012, I've stayed. He is a nice, down to earth man with exceptional attention to detail and thorough exam practices. Our son has been his patient also, and now my husband is going there. The only negative is that as a small practice, there is a wait once you are in the waiting room. But he's worth it. Try Ohana

I've been a patient for Dr. Chu for many years, ever since he was located at the Ala Moana Building. Dr. Chu himself has very good bedside manner and will answer all the questions you have about your vision and any issues you have. He's very knowledgeable about optical health and he tries to make the eye exams as painless and fast as possible.

I have to give Dr. Chu a heads up that sometimes the receptionists tend to be a bit on the harder to handle side. When he was at the Ala Moana Office he had a pretty good staff, but as there's variances on who goes and stays, the quality

My wife and l have been cared for by Dr. Chu for over 20 years. He recently removed cataracts from both my wife’s wye. Everything went perfectly, and my wife’s vision was restored to normal. He has excellent Dr/patient interpersonal skills, so you will understand everything that is going on with your eyes.

Went to this office for the first time today and I could not be more pleased. Scheduling was simple, I was seen in a relatively short time and the staff was friendly, polite and efficient. Dr. Chu answered my many questions without being rushed. I was told the prices for differing lenses and never felt pressured to purchase there, unlike many other businesses. I am pretty picky regarding eye care, as I am a certified Ophthalmological Assistant, and as a Special Needs RN I vision tested many hundreds of children. This office was clean, organized and followed a hygienic routine.

Excellent care, waited less than 5 min in waiting room, Dr. Chu explained all issues to me clearly during the exam. The prescription in only one eye changed, they offered to switch out that lens in my current glasses for a $14 copay and had them ready one day later. Efficient and thorough.

I recently accompanied my friend to see this eye doctor. He was ok but the 2 women up front were horrible. The skinny one didn't seem to know anything and was rude when my friend took some time finding her insurance card, she acted like we were imposing on her. Then the other one was so loud when she was on the phone, we could hear everything. Then that one came to help the skinny one and was rolling her eyes behind the skinny one. It was almost comical. The exam was ok, but he seemed in a hurry even though we were the only ones there, the lady selling glasses was nice. But all in all not

Only ordered contacts here, but came to pick them up and had to wait in the waiting area for about 20 or so minutes. seemed like the woman in charge of contact order long was in no rush to help me, was talking loudly to a colleague on the phone, but I could tell the conversation turned personal and not just about business, which made me even MORE frustrated to be sitting so close by not being helped. They could do a better job at communicating between the front desk person and the contact ordering lady. Made me so annoyed that I will probably avoid going for an upcoming eye exam here and will look

Great service. Fast, knowledgeable and prompt. No waiting and one stop shopping for contacts and glasses at reasonable prices. Examination by an ophthalmologist is very reassuring.

The assistant, the ophthalmologist and the lady who "takes care of the eye glasses" were all awful. Find yourself another doctor in town even if you were 'referred' over.

WARNING: ABSOLUTE WORST OPTOMETRIST IN HAWAII

So a couple of years ago I went here for an eye check up and an initial appointment with this practice, and they made me wait in their office for an ungodly amount of time even though I was on time. During and after my appointment, the receptionist was so rude to me that she actually insulted me, and I actually stormed out of the office after I was done with the check up without even scheduling the next appointment because I felt so hurt.

Anyways, a couple of weeks later after suffering alot of headaches and blurry vision I went to Costco to get
