Services
Beard Lumber has been an Independent - owner managed company - On its present site since 1906. We have particular ability to serve homeowners, and independent contractors serving such homeowners in the construction of new homes and major remodeling projects where the timely and accurate interpretation and costing of engineered plans and delivery of material is paramount.
We stock a large selection of dimensional lumber in various sizes and lengths. We carry both fir and pressure-treated as well as specialty woods such as Ipe. We also carry LVLs and iBeams as well as all of the hardware you will need for installation (joist hangers, hurricane clips, etc.). We carry a wide array of plywoods in various thicknesses including standard CD-X for sheathing, as well as pressure-treated and marine grade (void-free).
We offer a large selection of top quality fiberglass doors from Thermatru - the industry leader. They resist denting and require less maintenance than either wood or steel. And the best part is that Thermatru fiberglass doors are available with a wood grain appearance that can be painted or stained.
When you need doors and windows that are not only beautiful, but also stand up to weather and abuse, choose Marvin. Their Integrity line is built using a special fiberglass called Ultrex. Ultrex fiberglass is eight times stronger than vinyl and three times stronger than vinyl/wood composites. It resists fading, chalking, peeling and cracking, providing excellent strength and durability.
We are conveniently located at the corner of Boston Post Road and Ford Drive, right across from Saybrook Ford. From I-95 South: Take Exit 68. At stop sign take a right. Follow to the stop light. Old school lumber yard. Good quality of materials. Most staff are the variety "I've been doing this for ages and I'm used to dealing with other pros." - So good service if you can talk the talk, but it's a bit behind most DIY/non-contractor expectations.
Example: Staff seems to expect you to know what you're looking for, so if you want 3/4" plywood, but you don't know what grade you need they can seem annoyed by having their time wasted.
So in short - this is a good place to go buy materials, but it is not a Lowes where they will walk you through your material selection process and answer dozens

I called twice and spoke with 2 people that were ok on the phone,,I asked questions regarding the type of wood I need to buy .When I went in person and spoke to the guy in the lumber yard that would be cutting the wood, his opinion was different from the person I so poke with earlier by phone. My friend also inquired about the measurements and type of wood I needed.I was instructed to go into the office to ask the guys to explain it further to me and that's where I can pay for my order. I asked for the manager because I was given 2 varying opinions. The guy stood up from where he was sitting
