In the early 1970's, Duane Sumner developed an interest in buying and selling used farm equipment. At that time he was employed by the Aro Corporation in Bryan, Ohio. There was a strong demand for good used farm equipment, so he began to buy equipment on a part-time basis and primarily market through wholesale auctions or to other dealers.
In 1973, Duane left the Aro Corporation and decided to devote full time to trading machinery, raising beef cattle, and farming. With being able to devote more time to the equipment business, he founded Sumner Equipment and new areas opened up for purchasing good used items, as well as avenues for marketing those items.
