The Alta Ranch is tucked away in a picturesque and pristine setting in the Bitterroot Mountains 90 miles south of Missoula, Montana and 30 miles southwest of Darby, Montana. With six vacation homes (authentic log cabins) on 350 acres, the Alta Ranch offers plenty of privacy and room to roam. Two-thirds of a mile of the upper West Fork of the Bitterroot River flows through the ranch.

Enjoy excellent walk-and-wade cutthroat trout fishing on the ranch all year round in the river or large rainbow-stocked private pond. Guests can visit the nearby Selway, Salmon, Bitterroot, and Big Hole rivers. The ranch abuts the Bitterroot National Forest for hiking or hunting adventures.
Services
The spring offers wildflowers and fields of green, green grass to enjoy. The ranch is coming back to life after the long winter and snowmelt. The rivers, streams, and lakes are at their fullest and we do get occasional rain. The temperatures can vary quite a bit from the 30's to the 70's. The local wildlife is very active at this time and it is common to see Moose, Elk, and White-Tail Deer on the ranch.
The Alta Ranch offers five comfortable, spacious, hand-hewn log cabins, fully furnished and equipped to the most exacting detail. Each cabin is private, and nestled in the pines. See an aerial map of the ranch and the cabin locations. Each Alta Ranch cabin has a wood stove in the living room and is stocked with plenty of lodgepole pine, ponderosa pine, and Douglas fir firewood.
Shopping for Montana souvenirs, cowboy hats, Native American and western artwork, antiques, collectibles, and much more in Darby. The selection will exceed your expectations. Together they form the largest contiguous wilderness area in the lower 48 states. View absolutely spectacular scenery in a vast unspoiled forest highland that has very few visitors due to its remote location.
The Alta Ranch is an ideal wedding destination. Stage your wedding next to the river or on the meadow with a spectacular view of the mountains and forest. Six deluxe cabins will accommodate your guests. There are 350 acres to roam, a large pond, and romantic spots for wedding photographs to treasure forever.

Comfortable cozy cabin! Katrin and Peter run a very nice establishment. The ranch clearly focuses on family activities. The Moose Crossing cabin where my sister and I stayed was well equipped, comfortable, and clean. Thanks so much for taking care of all of the little details. We left the Alta Ranch with great memories.

My friend and I both work in sales and the field can be very stressful at times. Seeking for a relaxing weekend away, we came across a deal that we couldn't pass up. We stayed in the Cottonwood Cabin over the Labor Day 2012 weekend and just loved it! The cabin was clean and furnished and we found the lack of cell phone reception and television really added to the ambiance of the mountain setting. Being there with our wives and children, we were so happy that there were activities outside of the cabin available and that we were not 'nickel and dimed' for each activity, but rather they were all inclusive
