Benona Township Park
Benona Township occupies a unique part of the world. We are blessed with a mix of temperature, rain, sun and soil that produces an abundance of food. We are the Asparagus Capital of the United States and we celebrate its harvest every year. Visit us in late May or early June and see for yourself. Try the "deep fried" asparagus - it is a taste treat.

Water played a major role in the early development of Benona Township. Lake Michigan is our western border, which provides a natural boundary that is over six miles long. The white sand beaches are some of the best in the world. A portion of our southern boundary includes Stony Lake (over 270 acres in size) and Stony Creek, which provides an outlet to Lake Michigan.

Benona Township Park is my favorite beach on Lake Michigan, hands down. When I still lived in West Michigan, I came here as often as possible, year round. Places like this beach are hidden gems and to be able to spend time, any time, here heals the soul.

We took our family to this beach mainly because it was free. One of the local guide books said it's usually empty. It was definitely NOT empty, but was a nice free beach. There were a few people with dogs, lots of families with kids and beach umbrellas/tents/kites. Parking is kind of insane - get to the beach early for a spot. Once the parking lot filled up, people parked all along the road side (even though signs said not to). I'm not sure how often they ticket/tow cars. The sand was fairly clean, but did have some small sticks/debris from campfires on the beach.

Pros:
Small beach
Free

This is a secluded, Lake Michigan beach that is well off the beaten path. It probably has only 20 parking spots.

This is a romantic spot. My wife and I sat there for 2-hours and read books. There is only a portable toilet, which is a negative.

3-fire pits.
Slow moving, shallow channel that is great and safe for kids to play in and launching kayaks.

The beach is located west of Stoney Lake, in Shelby, MI. Take the US-31 New Era exit (M20/Stoney Lake Rd) then proceed west until you get to Scenic Dr, then about 1/2 mile to the party store on the west end of the lake. Then take W. Garfield
