Our Tasting Room inside capacity currently stands at 12 with plenty of room for social distancing, but the weather is getting better and there is room for another 16 people on our covered porch. Online orders are still available on this site at the Our Wines tab, and we are happy to accommodate orders for curbside pickup.

Just give us a call at 540-413-6454 to schedule a purchase and pickup. We are a family-owned and operated winery and vineyard in Essex County, Virginia committed to producing quality estate wines, each expressing the unique character of the property. We take a minimalist approach to wine making to allow the flavors created in the vineyard to be fully expressed in the wine.
Services
Caret Cellars is a veteran family-owned and operated vineyard and winery located just off Route 17 in Essex County, Virginia. Caret Cellars is an hour northeast of Richmond, 40 miles southeast of Fredericksburg and 70 miles north of the Tidewater area. R.D. and Junghee Thompson purchased the land for the vineyard in 2006, planted their grape vines in 2007, and built their winery in 2014.
Caret Cellars provides a warm and welcoming atmosphere. We have recently expanded the winery to include a new tasting room where you can try our wines at the tasting bar or visit the adjacent production area where we can show you the winemaking process. Enjoy our wines in our tasting room or sit outside on the covered porch overlooking our vineyard.
No reservations or appointments are necessary for wine tastings and tours during normal operating hours. We are a small winery and we enjoy showing guests around and discussing our wines. For a private gathering, please call (540) 413-6454 to discuss options and make an appointment. We are also able to accommodate private groups by appointment after hours and on days we are not normally open.
Historical walking tour of Tappahannock - The Tappahannock Historic Town Walking Tour is designed to take you back to the 17th, 18th and 19th century buildings all located within 3 blocks of one another in the central downtown area. Visit the Historical Walking Tour Website for more information. Chesapeake Bay Wine Trail - The Chesapeake Bay Wine Trail features nine premiere wineries located in the beautiful, sunny Northern Neck of Virginia.
Our wine club is still a work in progress. Our plan is that members will receive scheduled shipments each quarter of two bottles of our estate wines, one red and one white or rose', over the course of the year. They will also be able to pick up these shipments at the winery.

Members will enjoy a long list of special benefits including first access to our limited production wines, invitations to special member events, a discount on all wine purchases, complimentary tastings, and invitations to all private winery events. We expect to be able to offer this program sometime mid-2021.

Great wines! Loved white merlot, pinto grigio, and sangiovese but can't turn any of them down. Stop by! Will be back!

My wife and I went back to get more of the white merlot. This is an awesome wine that we can not get in Kansas.

I had a wonderful experience at Caret Cellars. We spent the weekend at the tentrr site at Sleigh Hill (also highly recommend) and the winery is right across the street! RD answered all my questions and allowed me to sample a few wines before purchasing. Great local winery off the beaten track. Also, it’s dog-friendly!

What a great chance to pause on our trip to Hampton Roads. The owner brought sodas for the kids to drink, then took the kids on a tour of the vineyard while us adults enjoyed finishing a glass. The white Chardonnay had a crisp sweet taste. We will be back.

We’re not huge football fans, so we came during the Super Bowl to have a relaxing time to ourselves and Caret Cellars turned out to be an excellent choice. While we’ve toured most of the wineries on the Rappahannock county side of the river, we hadn’t been to any on this side of the river yet until today. If you’re a fan of crisp wines you’ll be very pleased; personally I’m not a fan of strong pepper/oak flavours and both the red and white offerings here were delightfully balanced. My favourite was the Bay Blu, semi-sweet and wonderful to sip in their spacious tasting room. The owner

RD, the owner of Caret Cellars, greeted us immediately with a welcoming smile. He was extremely knowledgeable about wine and those he poured for our 8 varietal tasting. Great stop on our scenic Route 17 tour back to Hampton Roads. Cheers to great wine! Super Tuscan 2014 is a great suggestion.

Great little winery! Wines were very tasty and the tasting room was nice. The best part of the experience was the owner - super nice and gave us a great overview of his winery and the local area. Definitely worth the trip!
