Ensuring every young person is prepared for college and able to contribute to a more just and sustainable world. Students co-create their classroom experience, enabling them to pursue their passions, think critically, solve problems, and be creative. This approach helps them develop a strong sense of individual and community culture while exploring real-world skills.

Expanding worldviews and fostering better thinkers. Students are taught to understand that no text is neutral - bias is in everything. Critical Literacy is the ability to spot these biases and see the power dynamics in books, social media, music, art, news, and other resources. Creating safe spaces for generations to come together and share their wisdom, skills, and knowledge.

The Intergenerational Learning Alliance (ILA) is a program within the Whatcom Intergenerational High School structure. The ILA's purpose is to connect our students with the elders of our broader Whatcom community, who may have distinct insights, skills, and knowledge to share.

By connecting generations, we strive to broaden our community's perspectives and experiences, and thus contribute to growth in compassion, generosity, critical consciousness, and deepened inquiry skills for us all.The Intergenerational Learning Alliance is also deeply committed to centering our humanity as individuals by re-learning the importance of emotional, social, cultural, spiritual, and physical care.
Whatcom Intergenerational High School envisions learning as the authentic investigation of real- world phenomena that focus on issues important to students as well as the community. Students work on complex and ambiguous problems grounded in their own interests and curiosity. Learners look at multiple perspectives and use the same methods, tools and skills found in the jobs/careers where the knowledge is used.
Learners at WIHS also learn to critically examine language and texts to become more discerning citizens in a global and social media world. This literacy approach (reading, writing, and dialogue) helps students learn about what holds historical significance and why.

By looking at whose perspectives are being uplifted, whose agenda is valued, and whose voices are left out, students develop an understanding of how issues of power affect their own lives, the land, and the broader community.Through these learning processes, students develop critical consciousness and agency to solve problems and create change beyond the walls of the classroom.
