Are you looking for long-term weight loss results with a team that will guide you before, during, and after the weight loss journey?. The South Mississippi Surgical Weight Loss Center (SMSWLC) was founded by South Mississippi Surgeons in the year 2000, and has been the premier center for bariatric surgery ever since.
Once you have completed BOTH of these steps please allow approximately 2 weeks for us to process your paperwork and then we will be in touch with the next steps. Approximately 3 weeks. We will contact you within 2 weeks of receiving your paperwork to schedule an appointment and provide you with more program details.
Dr. William T. "Pete" Avara, III, is a Board-Certified General Surgeon and Medical Director of South Mississippi Surgical Weight Loss Center. He is a graduate of the University of Mississippi School of Medicine, and he completed his residency in General Surgery at the University Hospital in Jacksonville, Florida.
Dr. William Avara, Dr. Jason Payne, Dr. John Hall, and our dedicated and caring team are proud to provide patients with compassionate, thorough, and personalized care. Our employees are trained to make sure that our patients are as well-informed and comfortable as possible while receiving treatment.
Our organization makes it a priority to maintain access to accommodating facilities that can fit the needs of all of our patients. We perform our bariatric surgery procedures at Singing River Health System. Singing River Health System is a MBSAQIP Accredited Center. We have dedicated operating room teams as well as dedicated in-patient and out-patient services.

The surgeons and entire SMSSWLC staff are wonderful from the pre-surgery preparation and training to the post-surgery care and support. This support is critical for a bariatric patient to be successful battling and recovering from long term morbid obesity. They even have a monthly support group which I have rarely missed.
I had a VSG in March 2015 and I'm very pleased with my new tool to help get my weight problem under control. I went from size 4XL shirts and 54 pants to XL shirts and 42 pants.

Every visit I have been spoken to with compassion, care and understanding. Many of the staff have had the procedures offered (even recently) so they truly understand what it feels like to be overweight and/or embarrassed by your size. I am so glad that I've come to this team, Dr. Payne and his staff are wonderful.

I had a lap band put on in 2006. In 2010 I immediately let them know something was wrong. Went in the clinic to be checked to find out the band had slipped. I did not even know that was possible. They said it was my fault and that I would have to have surgery to correct. I asked is there a charge?? Of course there is. Dr Avara was so nice while having the band put on. However, when this happened it was as if he was someone different. I could not afford the surgery. My stomach has now grown all around the band and it has become very dangerous. They will not help in any manner. I have bile that comes
