I always look forward to performing at the Chilkat Center for the Arts. The intimacy of the hall, its modern technical capabilities, its ample backstage area, and above all, its warm ambiance and live acoustics place it among the finest performing arts facilities in Alaska. It is more than just a place to meet - it is an experience - and why wouldn't it be.
From the marvelous acoustics of the stage and auditorium, to the easy grace of the main lobby with its spectacular view of the Lynn Canal and the Alaska Mountain Range, it accommodates a crowd or an intimate gathering with typical Haines hospitality. Everything seems to be in harmony, which is why the people of Haines know this is a place unlike any other.

Like all Alaska, the Chilkat Center for the Arts has a history that is unique. The building itself began in the late 1800s as part of one of Alaska's earliest canneries. In 1924, it was purchased by the U.S. Army, dismembered, floated in sections around the Chilkat Peninsula, and reconstructed as the Education and Recreational Building at its present location at historic Fort William H. Seward.
Storytelling is a living form of art that tells the narrative of the community one story at a time. Come join us for our own Haines storytelling gathering, "River Talk", at the "Chilkat Chit Chat Cafe" in the lobby of the Chilkat Center for the Arts. We plan to have fun with this of a winter's evening!
