The American Logistics Association (ALA) traces its roots back 100 years to 1920 and the loose confederation known as the Quartermaster's Association. The initial concept was a forum to discuss ideas, partnership and improve the marketplace and it would seem that good ideas are enduring. Evolving over the years to meet the transformation of the business channel, ALA became a trade association in 1974.

The American Logistics Association (ALA) is a non-profit trade association dedicated to promoting, protecting and enhancing Total Quality of Life Benefits for active duty, retired, and reserve military personnel and their families.

ALA's members are manufacturers, manufacturer's representatives, brokers, distributors, publishers and service providers who sell or provide products and services to the military resale systems and MWR/Services industries.The term "military resale systems" is used to include all military exchanges, commissaries, Department of State stores and Veterans' Canteens.

It provides a full range of quality merchandise and services at uniformly low prices to the military community regardless of where they are stationed throughout the world. Military exchanges are categorized as joint military activities. They are self-funded and pay operating costs from revenues.
MWR is a military acronym that stands for Morale, Welfare and Recreation. The term is given to a complete range of community support and quality of life programs for members of the Armed Forces, their families, and retirees at more than 2,000 facilities on U.S. military bases throughout the world.
