Assistive Technology Loan Fund
The Assistive Technology Loan Fund Authority (ATLFA) is a Commonwealth of Virginia State Authority created with public funds to help Virginians with disabilities obtain assistive technology. The ATLFA provides affordable financing alternatives (loans with below-market interest rates, no down payments, longer repayment terms, etc.) to help make adaptive equipment a possibility for individuals who might not otherwise be eligible for borrowing.

Any type of equipment can be financed as long as it relates to an individual's disability; examples include recreational equipment, vision aids, communication and hearing devices, and vehicles with modifications. Regardless of income, any Virginia resident with a disability, or a caregiver of a person of any age with a disability, can apply for a loan.
Services
The Assistive Technology Loan Fund Authority offers low interest loans for a variety of special equipment to eligible applicants. The interest rate is normally well below normal market rates, and loans are available with no down payment and longer terms which reduces monthly payments. These low interest loans are direct loans made by the Assistive Technology Loan Fund Authority.
Automobile loans are made to enable a person with a disability to purchase a modified van or car, or to make necessary modifications to an existing vehicle. The modifications should accommodate a specific disability (wheelchair lifts, hand controls, etc.), and are secured by the vehicle. Qualifying borrower must be a resident of Virginia with a disability or a family member of someone who has a self identified limitation to a major life function.
Many pieces of adaptive technology may be obtained without an assessment or evaluation. For these items, it is the consumer's choice as to what type of device, manufacturer, model and options will be purchased. However, the more complicated a device is, the greater the need for a professional or group of professionals to be involved the process of device selection.
