The Kankakee County Historical Society, founded in 1906, is one of the oldest historical societies in Illinois. It was formed by a coalition of local groups as varied as the Nature Club and the Spanish War Veterans. The Historical Society displayed artifacts and documents, beginning in 1912, in a room provided by the Kankakee High School (then located on the northeast corner of Indiana Avenue and Station Street).
In 1935, extensive renovations at the High School forced the group to move its collection to the Kankakee County Court House. The collection was moved back to the Kankakee High School in 1944, where it remained for four years. The Kankakee County Historical Society found a permanent home in 1948, when the Historical and Arts Building was constructed on Governor Small Memorial Park.

Built in 1855, this home is one of the Museum's living history buildings. The home is set to look as though a family home may have looked in the mid to late 1800s. 2015 saw the renovation of the upstairs bedrooms, including a master bedroom, children's bedrooms, and a play area featuring a collection of 19th Century toys.

Stepping into the K3 Co Museum is like stepping back in time. We know there's both good and bad in history, and I love how this museum combines exhibits that educate, entertain, and shed a light on what used to be inhabited by the Potawatomi, then the "settlers," and then the railroad paved the way for actual villages and communities (and Kankakee as the county seat).
Be sure to take in the spectacular Barnard sculpture exhibit. And walk through their gardens. For some local offerings of art, stop into their gift shop. Support local!

Awesome museum, has displays that talk about the local area. But surprisingly they have really cool History of USA military uniforms from many different wars. Also have some neat local and national sports memorabilia. As well as some amazing sculptures. And much more! Staff is very friendly, highly recommend you check it out.

The Kankakee County Museum is an amazing gem. It's a must visit for new and longtime area residents. I recommend it for all ages. Interesting local and war history. The museum is clean and the exhibits are nice with some interactive places. A small gift shop is located here as well. There's also a one room schoolhouse and Dr. Small's house on the property. Behind the museum is a cute little trail for exercise. Last, but definitely not least - the staff are very friendly and caring.
