The name Hockessin may have been derived from the Lenape Indian word "hokesa" meaning "pieces of bark" or from a misspelling of "occasion" as pronounced by the Quakers who settled the area. Hockessin traces its roots back to 1688. The first Roman Catholic Church in Delaware was located in Hockessin.
Deerfield is a real estate neighborhood in the Hockessin area. It is located on Lancaster Pike (Route 41) and is the last neighborhood before the Pennsylvania State line. The center of Hockessin is, of course, super convenient. Restaurants in the area include one of my very favorites, The House of William and Merry.
Hawkes Aerie is a real estate neighborhood that is a bit of a hidden gem. Located in Hockessin (zip code 19707) it actually is behind the community of Bon Ayre off Old Wilmington Road. You actually drive through the main road of Bon Ayre to reach this development in the back. The homes here are newer than Bon Ayre and the location a bit more secluded.
Stenning Woods is a real estate community of Limestone Road (Route 7) near the Pennsylvania State line. It was built by Jack Corrozzi, (a former city of Wilmington Policeman who went on to become one of the area's premier builder before accepting a position as head of construction for MBNA). It followed the (by then) well established formula of combining townhomes and single family homes.
Greenville is the Chateau Country of Delaware. Originally the home of many huge DuPont family estates, it is a beautiful area of rolling hills and scenic byways. Sometimes referred to as the land of "pink and green" this is the real estate area with the most expensive homes and the highest per capita income in northern Delaware.
