In November of 1994 the Transfer Station was opened and in the fall of 1996 the drive-through recycling center opened in Bedford. Not long after, in June of 1997, the City of Bedford began the Curbside Recycling program. The Solid Waste District now serves Lawrence County through its numerous locations including the Collection Stations, Transfer Station, Recycling Center, Compost Facility, and Refrigerant Facility.

In 2018, the Lawrence County Solid Waste Management District collected many recyclables from residents and businesses. In most cases these materials are sold at a market value, and the revenue generated is used to fund future recycling efforts in our county!
LCSWMD actually saves money by recycling glass instead of taking it to the landfill: it costs $7.11/ton to recycle glass with our purchaser Strategic Materials, but over $30/ton to discard it in the Medora Landfill.The money we spend on glass recycling covers the cost of sorting and crushing the glass at the Strategic Materials plant.

Hard Cover Books: You may separate the covers and recycle them as cardboard, and recycle the pages as paper. Goodwill: All eleven Goodwill stores in southern Indiana are now accepting technological items for recycling. It's FREE! You can now recycle your used computers, computer equipment, cell phones, printers, scanners, cords, USB drives, fax machines and more simply by dropping the item off at the nearest participating Goodwill!
Recycling can generate many more jobs than waste disposal methods. This is because recycling processes are significantly more labor-intensive and do not use the regular equipment used for waste disposal. This results in the need for more employees to do the processing instead. In a report prepared by the Tellus Institute, it was found that if the US increases recycling rates from the current 33% up to 75%, it would create 1.5 million jobs!
The city of Bedford is in charge of the Curbside Recycling program and can be contacted at (812) 279-9222. They will explain how to get a red tub and what materials are accepted. Recyclables are picked up every other week on the same day as your regular trash pickup. Between pickups feel free to visit our Recycling Center at 3326 Mitchell Road.
