Auctioneers have the title of Colonel because at the end of the Civil War, President Lincoln ordered the disposal of surplus equipment of the War Department. The Army officers had to have the rank of Colonel or above. The auction method of selling assures that each item, or group of items will reach the highest price available that day when it is sold.
